Nekrotronic (4½ Stars)
This is the seventh film in the Stuttgart Nights Festival.
Sometimes the best films are the ones that sound the most ridiculous when you try to describe them. "Nekrotronic" is an Australian film about a war between demons and demon-hunters, called necromancers, that has been ongoing since the dawn of mankind. The necromancers have had the upper hand for centuries and have kept demon influence to a minimum. Recent developments have changed this. The demons have found a way to enter the Internet, so they are able to possess anyone who has a mobile phone.
The main character is Howard, a man who works in his family business of sewage removal. He's grown up in foster homes, never having known his true parents. He meets necromancers who tell him that his parents both came from long lines of necromancers, and he's inherited their skills. The problem is that his mother has turned evil and is working with the demons. She has a plan to swallow 1.2 billion souls. Howard has to battle his mother to save the human race.
The film has an almost hilarious mix of science fiction and supernatural elements. It could be called "Demon-Busters". Every time a seemingly insurmountable problem arises, an unbelievable solution is found. For instance, a necromancer is killed by having her head cut off. She's cured by making a new head with a 3D printer, attaching it to her body and putting her soul back. Easy.
If you like films that don't take themselves too seriously, this is for you.
