"Dark Water" has joined the ranks of the films that I've bought three times:
first as a DVD, then as a Blu-ray disc, and finally as a 4K disc. Of course,
this is only possible for the films that I purchased before I bought my first
Blu-ray player in 2010. Since then I've been buying films on Blu-ray, so I'll
buy them twice as most.
The picture quality of both the DVD and the Blu-ray discs was criticised for
being too grainy. I can see what they mean, but I read an interview in which
it was claimed that this was intentional to emphasise the overbearing squalor
of the surroundings. Nevertheless, the picture has been cleaned up for the new
4K release. People are being given what they want; or rather, the critics are
being given what they want. I quite like the new clean images. I can't give
any examples, because my computer isn't able to make screenshots of 4K images.
Just take my word for it.
"Dark Water" is one of my favourite films. Admittedly, it's in the lower half
of
my top 100 film list, but any film that's anywhere in the list is a brilliant film that I can
unconditionally recommend to anyone. I actually have a top 200 film list, but
the films from 101 to 200 are unordered. I've just kept a list of them as
films which I would have put in my top 100 if I'd had more room. That's the
problem: I have many, many films that I'd like to put in my top 100, but I
don't want to remove any of the films already in my list.
