Darkland (4 Stars)
This is the 28th film in the Stuttgart Fantasy Film Festival.
"Darkland" is a film about the Iraqi crime families in Denmark.
Zaid and Yasin are two brothers who live in Copenhagen. Zaid is a respectable surgeon. Yasin is a member of an Iraqi gang. Yasin makes a mistake which leads to a bank robbery failing. The leader of the gang, Semion, kills him because of his incompetence. Zaid is frustrated by the complacency of the police who show no interest in investigating the death of a 20-year-old criminal immigrant. This leads Zaid to put on a mask and hunt down Semion and his gang members.
In true Mafia fashion, Semion presents himself as the good guy. He says that he looks after the local Iraqi community, giving them money when they need help. He accuses Zaid of selfishness, earning a high salary which he keeps for himself.
This is a gritty crime thriller, which I'm sure many of my readers will enjoy.
