Desperation (3½ Stars)

In the middle of Nevada there are subterranean monsters, mistreated Chinese workers seeking revenge, shapeshifters, doubtful Christian theology... this is a mixed up story. I haven't read the book, but the film certainly doesn't make much sense. Too many non-cohesive ideas.

On the plus side, Ron Perlman is an excellent actor. I've always liked him, but he seems to be getting better with age.

  1. I totally agree re: Ron Perlman getting better with age. Perhaps in part this is him in fact aging, given his features? Like Willem Defoe, Perlman is _not_ handsome in any way but _is_ however remarkably charismatic. I loved the tv series Beauty and the Beast, though when I watch it now I tend to cringe and see mostly how dated it is. Vincent tho--Perlman brought him to life in a way I still considering moving and powerful.

  2. It's not just that Ron Perlman isn't handsome. Be honest, he's ugly! He's the only actor I know who's become successful in films because of his bad looks. Maybe Jack Black as well? I wouldn't say Willem Defoe is unattractive, he's just neutral. But hey! Who am I to judge men's looks? Let's talk about women instead.

  3. I agree Perlman is ugly (I was being nice :P). Personally I do see Defoe as ugly as well. But enough said - we can talk about women! :D

  4. Not now. I've already protocolled elsewhere on this blog that I find Jennifer Garner terribly unsexy.
