The Stranglers - 1.04 - Princess of the Streets

This is the fourth track of the album "Rattus Norvegicus", which was released in 1977. Despite being a love song, it contains derogotary remarks about the ex-lover and women in general. Please don't assume that this expresses my own views on women. I'm not a misogynist, and the Strangers themselves weren't misogynists. It was a principle of punk bands in the late 1970's that they wanted to offend people. They sang songs that were intended to shock. They wanted to wake up the world from its complacency. As I progress through the songs from their first three albums there will be even more offensive lyrics.

Princess of the Streets

She's gone and left me,
I don't know why.
That girl she's crazy,
She made me cry.
She's gone and left me,
I don't know why.
Yeah, she's the queen of the street,
What a piece of meat!

She's real good looking,
She makes me sigh.
Blue jeans and leather,
Her heels are high.
She's real good looking,
She makes me sigh.
Yeah, she's the queen of the street,
What a special treat!

She's no lady,
She'll stab you in the back.
She's no lady,
She's princess of the pack.

With words of fire
She'll make you small.
With eyes that smile
She'll make you tall.
With words of fire
She'll make you small,
But you would rather wait a year
Till she gave you a call.

She's gone and left me,
I don't know why.
That girl, she's crazy,
She made me cry.
She's gone and left me,
I don't know why,
But she's the queen of the streets,
What a piece of meat!

She's no lady,
She'll stab you in the back.
She's no lady,
She's princess of the pack.
