Creature from the Black Lagoon (4 Stars)
Those were the good old days. In 1954 people really knew how to make films. I admit that special effects weren't up to today's standards. The creature looks like a man in a rubber suit. Nevertheless, the film is exciting, and especially the music stands out as being more dramatic than in anything made today. The film was made in 3D, and the technology is compatible with today's 3D films. It looks like 3D technology hasn't advanced in the last 60 years.
Even though the creature kills four members of the Amazon expedition it's difficult not to have pity with him. All he's doing is trying to protect himself from the most deadly predator of all, man. And like all monsters, he can't help falling in love with the pretty girl, in this case the beautiful actress Julia Adams.
I've read that Universal Studios is planning a remake of this film as part of their reboot of the whole Universal monsters franchise that began with "Dracula Untold". I'm sure they'll have a more realistic looking monster, but that isn't the most important thing. I hope they won't ruin the film by puffing up the delightfully minimal script of the original.
