Dragon Ma (Jackie Chan) is a coast guard officer determined to put an end to
piracy in Hong Kong. When corruption and rivalries complicate the mission, he
and his fellow officers find themselves caught up in a dangerous battle
against the pirates.
"Project A" is a wonderful showcase for Jackie Chan's talents as both an
action star and a comedian. The first hour is practically wall-to-wall comedy,
with physical gags, slapstick and increasingly ridiculous situations. The
change of tone in the second half is abrupt, but it doesn't bother me because
the film remains thoroughly entertaining.
The stunts are spectacular, and the fight choreography is terrific throughout.
Jackie combines martial arts with acrobatics and inventive use of the
surroundings, while Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao make excellent partners. The
action becomes more serious as the story develops, but there's no shortage of
exciting fights. The famous clock-tower stunt alone deserves its place in Hong
Kong cinema history.
