Takashi Miike's "One Missed Call" is an effective Japanese horror film built
around a wonderfully creepy premise. People receive mobile phone messages
containing the sounds of their own deaths, recorded in the future. When the
deaths begin to occur exactly as predicted, the mystery deepens, and the
horror becomes increasingly disturbing.
The film is genuinely frightening, with some memorable sequences and an
atmosphere of growing dread. My only real complaint is the explanation, which
arrives rather late and isn't entirely convincing. I also found the
consistently dark lighting of the indoor scenes irritating, sometimes making
it difficult to distinguish the characters.
Nevertheless, the horror works, and the film kept me thoroughly engaged. A
very enjoyable entry in the Japanese horror cycle of the early 2000's.
