Housewives From Another World (4½ Stars)

I'm happy to say that Fred Olen Ray has re-released another two erotic films on Blu-ray. "Housewives From Another World" is part of the Medina Collection, and "Invisible Centerfolds" is from the McKendrick Collection. I've chatted to him a few times on Facebook, and he's never differentiated between the two collections. He refers to them collectively as his Bikini Films.

It's a long time since I've watched "Housewives From Another World", so I can't make a direct comparison between the films, but I can compare the screenshots with my last review.

This is Ted Newsom on DVD

This is Ted Newsom on Blu-ray. He's never looked so awesome.

This is Christine Nguyen and Rebecca Love on DVD.

Bewitched Housewives (4 Stars)

I'm always happy when films from the Medina Collection are rereleased on Blu-Ray. As usual, Fred Olen Ray has released two films as a double bill. Unfortunately, Christine Nguyen doesn't appear in the bewitching outfit she wears on the cover.

"Bewitched Housewives" is an older Medina film, made in 2006. At the time his films were made in SD (single density), so I'm surprised that the film looks so good on the Blu-Ray disc.

The improvements are subtle but impressive. This is the DVD.

This is the Blu-Ray. Ted Newsom's face has more detail, and the colour is more natural. I could give a dozen examples of the differences, but you'll just have to take my word for it. Even if you have the two films on the disc, it's worth buying them again.

As usual, Retromedia Blu-rays are available exclusively from Makeflix.

Super Ninja Doll (5 Stars)

Forget the MCU. It had its day. Now we need superhero films like "Super Ninja Doll".

It was made way back in 2007 as the 16th film in the Medina Collection. I can verify that the lead actress, Christine Nguyen, hasn't aged a day since then. As she wrote on Facebook in 2020, "I'm Asian. I'll always be a schoolgirl".

And here she is, sitting at school reading a copy of "Super Ninja Doll". What she doesn't realise is that the comic isn't fantasy. They're adventures that really take place in an alternate reality. The comic jargon is "another dimension". The ruler of this dimension is the evil Tantella. She wants to conquer the Earth by kidnapping the Earth's top scientists and draining their intelligence.

This is Tantella's henchman Gorath, played by the magnificent Evan Stone. Did you know he's appeared in over 1300 movies in his 25 year career? He's been busy.

In the film Gorath becomes stronger by having sex. Before going into action he needs sex to charge himself. I find that weird. With me it's the opposite. After having sex I'm worn out, definitely not in a fit state to conquer the Earth.

The first person that Gorath meets on Earth is Mike Gaglio, Christine's school teacher. I love this screenshot. There's no dialogue, the scene speaks for itself. Mike is an incredible actor, perfect in whatever role he plays.

Here he is telling off Christine for reading comics in class.

He sits down behind his desk before continuing the conversation. Wise thinking.

He confiscates her comic, but Christine has another one. And then kapow! Super Ninja Doll sucks Christine into the comic and asks her for help against the forces of evil. Christine receives a mystical artefact. Whenever she holds it in the air she transforms into Super Ninja Doll.

Christine transforms from this...

into this. I preferred her as a schoolgirl, but she needs her super powers.

This is the second film on the Blu-ray with "Tarzeena". The B film? I'm just going by their order. This is definitely the better of the two films. I'd go as far to say as it's one of the best films in the Medina collection. I like it more every time I watch it. I'm also happy to say that the film's remastering is very good. Every scene looks perfect, especially the facial close ups. This is a must buy for anyone who likes super heroes, science fiction or schoolgirls.

Sleeping Beauties (5 Stars)

This is the second film on the "Frisky Fairy Tales" Blu-ray. I haven't been paying attention to the stories, because I know both of them already. I've already reviewed both films twice in the past. I've been concentrating on the picture quality. The difference is amazing. I've attempted to get an identical screenshot of Ted Newsom as an example.

This is a screenshot from the DVD.

This is the same scene from the Blu-ray. A first glance the two pictures look identical, but take a closer look. The skin complexion looks more natural in high definition. You can see the wrinkles on Ted's forehead more clearly. (Sorry, Ted). Ted's chin looks more natural. But the biggest leap in quality is the pattern on his jacket, which looks washed out on the DVD.

Is this difference in quality worth the higher price and possibly rebuying a film you already have? That's a question everyone needs to ask himself. I say Yes.

But if you're a hot-blooded man like me, you don't want to spend all day staring at Ted Newsom. (Sorry again, Ted). This is Beauty, with or without a capital B, played by Sarah Hunter. I don't have a DVD screenshot as comparison, but take my word for it that she looks perfect at the higher resolution.

She looks beauty-full with or without her clothes. Every pixel is in the right place.

This isn't the kiss that woke Beauty, but just because she's awake it doesn't mean she has to stop kissing.

Here's one more pair of screenshots as comparison. This is Beauty in the DVD.

This is Beauty in the Blu-ray. Apart from having a more natural looking face, her eyes sparkle more. Does anyone still doubt that Blu-ray is the way to go?

Bikini Jones and the Temple of Eros (4 Stars)

This is the 23rd film in the Medina Collection, and it's the third film in the collection to be remastered for Blu-ray, after "Bikini Frankenstein" and "Twilight Vamps". I suspect that the "remastering" is a minimum, because the later Medina films were all filmed in HD. The early Medina films were filmed in SD, so they'll need more work to be presented on Blu-ray.

The film's title has been shortened to "Bikini Jones" on the box, but the splash screen still shows the original full title. I prefer the long title, because it's more of a parody of the Indiana Jones films.

The picture quality is amazing. I was so astounded after the first few minutes, that I had to pause the film and compare it with the DVD release. Christine Nguyen has never looked so beautiful. I can't wait to get all 32 Medina films on Blu-ray. I've spoken to the director, Fred Olen Ray, a few times, and he's hesitant. He needs to be sure there's a market for Blu-ray releases. He can't afford to lose money, so he's starting with the films that star Christine Nguyen, because her popularity guarantees sales. She appears in 14 of the films. I'd be sad if the other 18 are never released on Blu-ray.

"Bikini Jones" has been packaged as a double feature with "All Babe Network". That's a strange combination, because "All Babe Network" isn't a Medina film, it was directed by Dean McKendrick. What connects them is that they both star Christine Nguyen.

There are lots of other beautiful women in the Medina films. Just look at Rebecca Love!

There's also Brynn Tyler. Okay, this is her only appearance in the Medina films, but I think you see what I mean. All the women in the Medina films are incredibly beautiful. They all deserve to be seen in High Definition Blu-ray.

Three down, 29 to go. What film will be next?

Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfold (5 Stars)

This is an example of how my tastes in films have changed over the years. This used to be my favourite film. I first saw it on videotape in the late 1990's, probably 1997. It was the very first film I bought on DVD from Amazon on 3rd August 2003. That's still the DVD that I'm holding in my hand today. I'd already bought a few DVD's from shops in Birmingham, but I'm sure it was among my first 10 films.

Maybe my tastes haven't changed that much. I didn't become a big film fan until I bought my first DVD player in 2003. I don't remember the exact date, but it can't have been long before 3rd August 2003. Sure, I'd watched films on television and videotape for years, but DVD's were a new experience for me. It's possible that I just didn't know that many films back then. On television I mostly watched the recent blockbusters. I only discovered older films later. "Attack of the 60 Foot Centerfold" remained my favourite film until 2005, when other films started to push it down the list.

I wish I'd started writing my blog in 2003 instead of waiting until 2010. The Blogger service exists since 1999, but it only became free to use after Google bought it in 2003. A year later it was made possible to insert photos into posts. After that upgrades were incremental. There weren't any big changes from 2010 to 2020, just small cosmetic changes. Now the design interface has changed. It's unfamiliar to me after ten years with the old interface, but I can put up with it. What I can't put up with is the long list of bugs that Google is unable to fix. Google's customer support for Blogger is non-existent, but in a way I can understand it. Why should they offer one-on-one support for a free product? I'd be willing to pay a reasonable amount for the privilege of direct communication with a developer. As it is, I just send the same bug list once a month to Google. There's no reply, and the bugs aren't fixed.

The centerfold in the film's title is Angel, played by J. J. North. (I hate the American spelling of centerfold, but I'll use it in this blog post). She was the Centerfold of the Month for the March edition of Plaything magazine. Now she's one of the top three models, of whom only one can become Plaything's Centerfold of the Year. She thinks she won't be picked because her breasts are shrinking. She shows them to her doctor, but he can't see any problem with them. Can you? Nevertheless, he gives her a revolutionary new serum that should increase her breast size within a week. Angel is only supposed to drink one vial each day, but she's impatient and drinks half a dozen vials on the morning of the photoshoot.

The result is that she shoots up to 60 foot in height. Poor Angel wants to get back to normal, but Bob Gordon, the owner of Plaything, has other ideas. He wants to keep her at giant size in order to exploit her as the biggest centerfold ever.

One of the other models is jealous of Angel being picked as Centerfold of the Year, so she breaks into Angel's rooms and steals the remainder of the serum. Now there are two 60 foot centerfolds!

The two girls get into a catfight that leads them all the way from the beach to downtown Los Angeles. This is one of the most ridiculous scenes I've ever seen, but it's delicious as a parody. The two bikini clad giantesses battle in the street, while people are running away from them in fear. You would think it's Godzilla battling King Kong.

There's just one problem with the film. It's not just the oldest DVD in my collection, it's the worst quality. The picture is fuzzy throughout. There are different reasons. Partially it's a poorly mastered DVD. Partially the special effects are below the standards that we expect today. The film was made in 1995, before the days of green screens. It would have cost a lot more to make the giantess scenes look more realistic.

I wrote to Fred Olen Ray begging for a remastered Blu-ray of this classic film. He replied that it's not possible because the producer Roger Corman has "mislaid the negative". That's awful. How about remaking the film, keeping as close to the original script as possible? I hope Fred is reading this.

If you're a regular reader of my blog, you might have noticed that I've skipped a number in my top 100 countdown. It's not a mistake, I skipped #93 on purpose. I shan't tell you why, but I'll get to it eventually. Be patient. All will be revealed. If you can guess the reason, leave a comment, and I'll give you a simple Yes/No answer. No more clues.

Twilight Vamps (4½ Stars)

This is the other film in the Blu-ray double pack with "Bikini Frankenstein". Both films are excellent in their own way. Both films look first class in high definition. This is the way they were meant to be seen.

Another advantage of the 1080p definition is that I recognised Christopher Olen Ray as a customer in the Shadows strip club. Well, I was only about 90% certain it was him, so I asked him, and he told me he couldn't remember being in the film. After I sent him a screenshot he confirmed it was him. To me that's crazy. He sat on a film set surrounded by naked women, and he forgot? Has he seen so many naked women in his life that he can't remember them all?

Christine Nguyen was also on the dance pole. Even though she was only topless, not completely naked, that's a sight that would have been engrained in my memory as long as I lived.

The film is about a strip club whose dancers are vampires. They kill their customers when they give them private dances. That's an obvious plagiarism of "Vamp", but who cares? Without copying good ideas from other films the film industry would be dead. Quentin Tarantino has made a whole career out of plagiarism. The main difference is that "Vamp" deals with horny teenagers in a vampire strip club, whereas "Twilight Vamps" deals with respectable businessmen.

It's no secret that I'm a big fan of Ted Newsom. I prefer to call him Ted Awesome. He appears in 14 of the Medina films, usually as a straight-faced comedic character. I'm happy whenever he walks on screen. Here's a small gallery of awesome screenshots from "Twilight Vamps". I'll let you write your own captions. Leave your suggestions in the comment box, and the winner will receive a big hug from me. You'll have to pay the travelling expenses to receive your prize, but my hugs are worth any price.

I'm an even bigger fan of Christine Nguyen. I know that staring at her too long will scramble your brain, so I've written the captions myself.

"Hi, I'm Christine. My hobbies are astrophysics and playing Monopoly".

"Bad boy! Look at my eyes when I'm talking to you!"

This Blu-ray isn't available on Amazon, only from Makeflix. The DVD is long sold out, but you might find copies on Ebay if you're lucky. Forget about them! The Blu-ray is far superior quality.

Bikini Frankenstein (4½ Stars)

Just over a month ago (28th November, to be precise) Fred Olen Ray announced that he was going to release "Bikini Frankenstein" and "Twilight Vamps" on Blu-ray. This knocked me off my chair (figuratively speaking). They're films I've always wanted to own on Blu-ray, but I've never dared to ask, because I assumed the answer would be No. In the following conversation with Fred on his Facebook page, he said that he would continue to release his Medina films on Blu-ray as long as they sell. That's fair enough. He's in business for the money. He teased me by hinting that he intends to release "Haunting Desires" and "Voodoo Dollz" on Blu-ray in the near future. I didn't press him any further, because it was obvious that if he wanted to say more he would have done so already.

Two weeks of nail-biting. Then he announced that the Blu-ray was on sale, not from Amazon (unfortunately), but from a company called Makeflix. I ordered it immediately. Yesterday evening it arrived. I was too busy with household chores to watch it immediately, but just after midnight I sat down to watch it.

The quality is incredible, compared with the DVD that I've owned for years. The improvement in the facial textures is overwhelming. The first thing I noticed is that I could see every wrinkle on Ted Newsom's forehead. (Or maybe he doesn't want that?) The improvement in the appearance of the girls in the film, especially Jayden Cole (shown above) also knocked me out. There were a few details that I couldn't remember being in the film. I compared the versions on two screens side by side, and yes, the details were in the DVD version, but they'd never been apparent to me because I'd missed them at the lower resolution.

This morning I sent Fred a message, thanking him for the terrific release and asking if the other 30 films in the collection could be easily transferred to Blu-ray without remastering. He told me that the first half of the films had been filmed in SD, but he's already upgraded "Teenage Cavegirl" and "Tarzeena" to HD, and he claims that while not perfect the improvement in quality should be enough to satisfy fans.

Incidentally, the original Medina films all cost about $12 each from Amazon. This release as a double feature cost me $18.99. That means that the Blu-ray release is cheaper than the original DVD release!

I'm hoping that Fred's fans will snap up all the Blu-rays as soon as they're released. That way Fred will be encouraged to keep releasing them in swift succession. I want to complete my collection as soon as possible.

For anyone who doesn't know, this is the complete Medina collection. Maybe I should add "Tomb of the Werewolf" to the list. Fred released it using his own name, but it stars the same actors as the Medina films. It was probably made between "Bikini Airways" and "Haunting Desires", even though the release date is 2004.

1. Thirteen Erotic Ghosts (2002)

3. Haunting Desires (2003)

Super Ninja Doll (4 Stars)

"I'm Asian. I'll always be a schoolgirl" (Christine Nguyen, 11th November 2020).

"Super Ninja Doll" is the third film included in the Christine Nguyen Collection. This was a necessary rerelease, because the original DVD was long out of stock. Unfortunately, the Christine Nguyen Collection is now also sold out, and I have no way of knowing if it will ever be made available again.

As in "Voodoo Dollz", Christine is playing a schoolgirl once more. It's a role she plays well, however old she gets. She's a naughty girl who reads comics in class. What she doesn't know is that her comic is a portal from another universe. A warrior called Gorath enters our world in order to steal the Earth's most intelligent scientists.

There weren't any girls like this in my school. I grew up in the wrong country.

Bikini Girls from the Lost Planet (4 Stars)

I'm still experimenting with my new television set and 4K Blu-ray Player. I've already seen how well it upscales films from the standard 1080p resolution to 4K quality. I was highly impressed. Today I wanted to see how it handles upscaling from DVD resolution (probably 540p) to 4K. The picture was good, but not perfect. It was slightly blurred, especially in complex scenes with a lot of people. Nevertheless, it's an improvement over upscaling to 1080p.

Click here to read my review of this film. The original release is long out of print, and even the rerelease in the Christine Nguyen Collection, pictured above, is now unavailable. This is an item that you had to grab while it was hot.

Bikini Sorority House (1 Star)

I was pleasantly surprised when Amazon sent me an email recommending this DVD. A new film by Dean McKendrick? I wasn't aware that he'd made any films since he stopped making erotic thrillers for Retromedia. It wasn't listed on IMDB, but IMDB isn't infallible. So I ordered it... and waited... and waited... which is normal, because deliveries from America to Germany normally take a few weeks.

Yesterday it finally arrived, and I couldn't wait to see it. The opening credits listed a lot of my favourite actresses, including Christine Nguyen, whose name wasn't mentioned on the Amazon product page.

When the film started I was puzzled. Erika Jordan and Krissy Lynn were in college listening to Ted Newsom talking about asexual reproduction. Hadn't I seen that somewhere before? Yes, it's a scene from "Strippers From Another World". Ah ha. So it's a re-release with a different name? That's okay. The DVD cover, shown above, describes the film as a director's cut, so why not?

The film continued with Sophia Bella offering Madge and Anita (Erika and Krissy) the possibility to join the sorority house Gamma Phi. But then the film cut to a fight scene between Erika Jordan and Jazy Berlin, taken from "Sexy Warriors". The on-screen text explained that Madge was engaging in Live Action Role Play (LARP), which is why she was calling herself Athena.

At that point I started to realise something was going wrong. The film is a cut-and-paste medley of scenes from five of Dean McKendrick's films:

"Strippers from another world"
"Sexy Warriors"
"Great Bikini Bowling Bash"
"Intergalactic Swingers"
"College Co-Eds vs Zombie Housewives"

Visually, the film can get away with it. Dean McKendrick's films intensively re-use the same locations, so it's easy to cut from one film to another. The same actors are also re-used, but the problem is that they don't have the same names or roles. People are addressed by different names too often for it to be excused as LARP-ing. Baily Beetleman is the strip club owner in an early scene, but later in the film he's just a customer. Added to the problem is that the cuts are made clumsily, abruptly ending or beginning the background music. This is worst in the final ten minutes, when there are quick cuts from one film to another, every 30 seconds or less, to resolve the various plot lines.

I'd have nothing against a film being advertised as a compilation of Dean McKendrick's best scenes. That would be acceptable. What I dislike is this film pretending to be something it's not. It's not a consistent narrative. It's a mess.

When I began to write this review I thought I would rate it two stars, because it at least has beautiful naked girls in it. No. That would be an insult to the actresses who will feel ashamed if they ever see this film. It's awful, and nobody should consider buying it. Not now, not ever.
