I'm a big fan of Chloe Grace Moretz. I've closely followed her career since
her early years. That makes me all the sadder that this film is an awful mess.
The film begins on a runway in Auckland, New Zealand on 8th August 1943. A
plane has to fly to Samoa, though it's not stated why. A young woman, Maude
Garrett, boards the plane on a top secret mission. She's carrying a package
that nobody must open. The sexist men in the crew don't like a woman
accompanying them, but they're forced to give her passage. Because the space
in the plane is so cramped, they tell her to stay in the gun turret until
after take-off. The turret is jammed, trapping Maude in the turret, and she
has to spend more than half of the film in this claustrophobic environment.
So far so good. But an ugly winged creature has stowed away on the plane, and
it's sabotaging the engines. At first Maude is the only one who sees it. Three
Japanese aircraft attack the plane, and the pilot has trouble defending the
plane while the creature is on board killing his crew. Maude eventually breaks
out of the turret, and she climbs along the outside of the plane in a way that
defies the laws of physics.
I don't mind films that mix genres, but this is a film that pushes it too far.
It's impossible to take the action seriously. An actress of Chloe's talent
must be able to find better roles.
On the plus side, this is the first film I've seen in which Chloe plays an
adult. In her past films she's always played a child or an older teenager.
