I'm happy to say that my local shop has another two wines from
Eberbach-Schäfer that I
haven't drunk before. So far I've drunk 12 different wines from the vineyard,
which has been in the hands of the Eberbach family since 1660. If I've counted
correctly, they make 40 different wines. If the shop sold them all, I'd work
my way through them, one at a time, but it's only a small corner shop that specialises in
fruit and vegetables. There's not much room for wine, and they usually
have a selection of about five different wines.
I've decided to review the two wines together simply because of the names. I
don't want to separate Romeo and Julia. Do the names have any significance? I
don't know. Could it be one wine is for men and the other for women? That's
not the impression I get when drinking them, although I've been told that
women like to drink rosé.
Romeo is made from Lemberger grapes, so I expected a strong fruity taste, but
I was still surprised by its overwhelming fruitiness. It's been months
since I last drank
Eberbach-Schäfer's standard Lemberger, so it's difficult for me to compare. Based on memory, it's not as fruity as
the Romeo. I ran back to the shop to buy a bottle of Lemberger for comparison,
but they don't have it in stock at present. The Romeo has an exceptionally
fruity taste for a medium dry wine.
Julia is a wine made from Spätburgunder and Samtrot grapes, with a hint of
Lemberger added. It has a powerful, refreshing taste. It's a perfect wine for
a hot summer day. It's nowhere near as fruity as the Romeo, but it's just as
enjoyable. It has a subtle acidity, hardly noticeable. I often say that wine
should be drunk for enjoyment, not to get drunk, but this is a wine that's
changed my mind. One glass isn't enough. The Romeo is a wine for slow sipping,
but the Julia is a wine to be quaffed.
Today I drank the two wines together, separated only by a glass of water
in between to remove the taste of the Romeo. I still have two half bottles,
and I'll drink each by itself. Life is good.
