Today I carried out a little experiment. I watched this film without the sound and
relied on the subtitles for "the deaf and hard of hearing". After the first
half hour I grew used to it, but there were still things that I missed by
pretending to be deaf. There's a scene where the android Walter is learning
how to play a flute. There was no way for me to experience his rapid
improvement from random sounds to skilled playing.
I'm glad I'm not deaf. If I ever became unable to hear, it would spoil my
enjoyment of films.
