Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls (3½ Stars)
This is a sequel to "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective", made a year after the first film, even though the events in the film take place a few years later.
Ace is suffering an emotional crisis after he fails to save a raccoon's life. He withdraws to a Buddhist temple to seek the path of enlightenment. He intends to remain there for the rest of his life, but a messenger is sent to tell him his services are needed once more. The great white bat of the Wachati tribe has been stolen, after it was promised as a dowry for a marriage between the the children of the chieftains of the Wachati and Wachootoo tribes. If it isn't retrieved in time for the wedding war will break out. Ace accepts the mission, even though bats are the only animals he dislikes.
At the beginning it seemed that the jokes of the first film were being repeated, but this was only as an introduction. The film soon goes its own way, treading new ground. Overall it's better than the first film. Just one thing puzzles me. In both tribes there seem to be hardly any women. The men outnumber the women at least 20 to 1. That's a shame. The eye candy is missing.
