Asteroid vs Earth (4 Stars)

A young lab intern discovers an asteroid that's on a collision course for Earth. Hasn't that been done before in films like "Armageddon" and "Deep Impact"? Yes, but this is a bigger asteroid that can't be destroyed or deflected by any man made explosions. It has a diameter of 200 miles, which makes it about a quarter of the size of the Moon. The only solution is for the Earth to be moved out of the asteroid's path. A plan is devised to create earthquakes with a strength of 18 on the Richter scale, which will disrupt the Earth's usual orbit around the Sun.

A few days ago I criticised Christopher Ray for the poor character development in his thriller "Staged Killer". That's something that doesn't apply to "Asteroid vs Earth". It's a disaster movie, and he succeeds in revealing the shows the personalities, hopes and dreams of the main characters in the face of extreme pressure. This film has been slammed by other critics, who dislike both the story and the directing, but I suggest that they watch it again. The film is a high octane adventure from beginning to end. The film's strength is in the mix of characters.

Evan Kitsias is the chaotic young intern, a genius, but so erratic that he's not taken seriously.

General Masterson is tough and rugged, willing to do whatever it takes to save the world.

Chase Seward is the submarine commander who leads the operation.

Dr. Marissa Knox is a civilian seismologist whose expertise is essential for the mission.

I accept that the film isn't scientifically founded. There would be consequences to pushing the Earth out of its regular orbit. The Earth might even start a slow spiral into the Sun. That's an idea for the sequel.

Obviously Christopher Ray put a lot of thought into the casting. Everyone looks like the role he plays. They're all believable characters, and we feel heartache for the ones who don't survive until the end of the film. In my eyes, this film succeeds in all the areas where "Staged Killer" fails.

Am I the only person who thinks that Tia Carrere is getting more beautiful with age? When I watched "Relic Hunter" 20 years ago I thought she looked dull, but just look at her now. What a face! If I saw her in a public place I'd make a fool of myself by staring at her with my lips mouthing the word "Wow". Added to this, she's the film's most talented actor. The rest of the cast is male, and I admit the men are talented, but she still puts them to shame with her emotional range. I don't know why she only appears in low budget movies. She deserves much bigger roles. Maybe she's not cast because she's only remembered for "Relic Hunter".

Summing up, don't believe everything that critics have to say about this film. It's well crafted and highly enjoyable. If you sit down and watch it with an open mind you won't be disappointed.

Oh, and don't be put off by the film's silly title.
