If "Thor" made me think that Tom Hiddleston is one of the best actors alive today, "The Avengers" (aka "Avengers Assemble" aka "Marvel's The Avengers" aka "Marvel Avengers Assemble") has confirmed it. It's a tribute to his acting talent that even though he was the bad guy I wanted him to win.
Isn't he the coolest bad guy ever? That subtle grin is so disarming.
He even looks cool in that silly hat.
But please spare some sympathy for our heroes. Saving the world is hard work.
Yes, I know I haven't written much about the film today. Do I need to? It was the most successful film of 2012, and the fifth most successful film ever. Does anyone still need convincing to watch it?

I like much of this... But its box office success did hinge on all the build up of smaller films and clever marketing. Without Loki this could have been just ok. The battles at the end got kind of generic too.
ReplyDeleteThe marketing strategy of a slow build up to the appearance of the Avengers super-group was brilliant. "The Avengers" would have been successful anyway, but the marketing gave it an additional kick. I agree that Tom Hiddleston was another big factor in the success. The best villains are the ones who are somehow likeable.
DeleteI found the final fight worked very well. It's difficult to portray a battle against an army on screen, but Joss Whedon pulled it off.
Hiddleston is invariably brilliant. A great face, strong voice and never seems miscast in any given role. I really liked Captain America, Black Widow, Nick Fury and of course Iron Man a great deal too. Age of Ultron is not a good film sadly.. Civil War is perhaps the best Avengers film so far, even if it is not a direct sequel.
ReplyDeleteI like "Age of Ultron" a lot, even though I miss Ultron's father complex, which is an important component in the comics. I agree that "Civil War" is better than either of the Avengers films.
