Masha and the Bear 1.4.1 - Gone Fishing

There are certain topics used more than once in "Masha and the Bear". One is Christmas. Another is fishing. It's Bear's favourite hobby when the weather is good.

Bear is digging a hole in the corner of his garden. Can you guess what he's doing?

Yes, he's catching worms for fishing, putting them in an empty Spam can. I never knew that Russians eat Spam. It's the breakfast of champions.

Bear strolls happily towards the lake, when he receives a shock.

It's Masha playing. That's the last thing he wants. He'd planned a relaxing day fishing by himself.

Bear hides behind a tree.

But Masha finds him. No peace for Bear! She persuades him to show her a few circus tricks.

Eventually they go their separate ways, and the fishing begins.

But Masha has followed him, still playing with her ball.

"Be quiet, Masha, you'll scare the fish away!"

Masha loses her ball in the lake, so Bear makes her a fishing rod.

Peace at last! Bear wishes Masha could always be so quiet.

They both catch something. Bear is disappointed with his catch.

But look at the wonderful fish that Masha's caught. It doesn't just look good, it's a magic talking fish that promises Masha three wishes.

Masha's first wish is that she can get her ball back.

Masha's second wish is for a lollipop. That's a modest wish, but she's given a magic lollipop that will never end.

That's two selfish wishes, but Masha's third wish is for her best friend Bear. She can see that he's disappointed after not catching any fish, so she wishes that he'll catch a big fish.

Wow! He catches a swordfish! I didn't know that they're found in Russia, especially not in small lakes.

Bear couldn't be happier. Masha throws the magic fish back into the water, and they go back home together. Bear can hardly wait to go fishing with Masha again.

Once more, this is an entertaining and wonderfully drawn episode. It's modern Russian culture at its best.
