Wild Cherry (3 Stars)

The picture above, taken from the DVD cover, is interesting. Despite showing the three main actresses from the film, it has little to do with the film itself. Tania Raymonde doesn't wear a 69 shirt in the film and she never picks up a football. It's a case of film packaging being spiced up to encourage fans to buy it. In other words, it's an attempt to make a film look better than it really is. That applies to "Wild Cherry". It's an unremarkable film in a sexy looking DVD box.

In itself, I find the film's plot appealing. The three friends in the picture, Trish, Katelyn and Helen, are in their last year of high school. They're all still virgins, and they want to lose their virginity before they go to college. Helen is close to achieving her goal. She has a steady boyfriend who's in the school football team. They're just waiting for the right time and place.

Things change when Katelyn discovers a secret tradition that's been in place for the last 50 years. The school football team, which calls itself the Buccaneers, has a book called the Buccaneer Bang Book, which they keep hidden in the school. It's updated once a year. In the latest entry Katelyn finds photos of herself, her friends and other girls in the final year, all labelled as virgins. Every member of the team is required to deflower one of these virgins before the end of the school year, to guarantee their future skills as football players. Some of the virgins are beautiful girls, like the three above, while others are plain or even ugly, but it doesn't matter, they all have to be deflowered, and the captain chooses which player gets which girl.

Helen naturally feels used, so she organises a counter-movement. She calls together all the girls on the list, and they make a pledge: none of them will lose their virginity before the end of the school year. They refuse to be trophies to be listed in the Buccaneer Bang Book for years to come.

I like films about smart girls outwitting horny boys. For me "Wild Cherry" is spoilt by the excessive vulgarities, There's a subplot about Helen struggling to get on with her single father, but that's just a distraction. Being cynical, I assume that this subplot was only included because the film is badly written and it wouldn't have been long enough without it.

Summing up, it's a cute film with a lot of pretty girls, but I doubt anyone will want to watch it more than once.
