Today is the first time I've watched "Fargo", even though it was made long ago
in 1996. It was a gap in my film education. Watching it today, I was stunned.
It was nothing like what I expected. Despite its low key pacing, it's very
Tarantino-ish in its screenplay. There are so many random elements that have
nothing to do with the story, technically speaking, but by being included the
characters are stronger and the whole film is better rounded. Think of all the
talk about quarter pounders in
"Pulp Fiction". Not relevant, maybe, but it's part of what makes the film a masterpiece. In
"Fargo" we have the painting for a postage stamp and the emotionally unstable
ex-boyfriend, to name just two small details. Genius! This is a film I should
have watched 24 years ago.
Have my readers all seen it already? It's a story about a simple plan that
goes terribly wrong. A car salesman wants to extort a million dollars from his
rich father-in-law, so he pays two crooks to kidnap his own wife and hold her
for ransom. What should have been a smooth operation turns into a disaster as
the body count slowly rises.
The story takes place in the snow-covered plains of Minnesota. Without the
desolate white background the film would only have been half as interesting.
