Broadcast Signal Intrusion (1 Star)

This is the fourth film in the Stuttgart Fantasy Film Festival.

The film takes place in 1999. A man called James works at a television station, transferring old broadcasts from tape to CD. It's a boring job, but someone has to do it. He discovers two old broadcasts that were interrupted by someone sending a pirate signal. In both cases a masked person made unintelligible sounds. These incidents fascinate him so much that he gives up his job to investigate them. He reads that the FBI searched for a whole year to find out where the illegal signals came from, but had no success.

The film is a mess. All the time I was expecting to find that a supernatural power was behind the signals, but the culprit is a normal human being. Well, not quite normal, we find out that he's a serial killer. James is assisted in his search by a mysterious woman who seems to know more about the broadcasts than she says. And there's a female robot that was used in a 1980's television show. If there's any logic to the film, I didn't see it. After the film we stood outside and discussed it. We couldn't agree on what it meant. We all had different theories about the character motivations.

I hope there won't be another film this bad at the festival.
