Yesterday was the first day of the 2022 football season in Germany. I'll be following VfB Stuttgart's performance closely, after the team barely avoided relegation last season. I'll watch as many matches as I can. My son Benjamin was at the stadium, but I was unable to join him. It was an exciting match, even though I could only watch online.

There were 46,000 spectators in attendance for the first match of the season in the Mercedes-Benz Arena. The match began badly for VfB Stuttgart. In the 8th minute Christopher Nkunku scored the first goal for RB Leipzig. As the game continued VfB gained the advantage. Silas Katompa Mvumba had the first offensive action for VfB in the 18th minute, followed by Chris Führich in the 20th minute. Finally Naouirou Ahamada scored the equalizer in the 31st minute. VfB was in control for the rest of the first half. Sasa Kalajdzic headed just wide after a corner by Chris Führich in the 41st minute, There was excitement in extra time, when Konstantinos Mavropanos hammered the ball against the goalpost.

VfB continued to have the advantage in the second half. Josha Vagnoman had the first good offensive action, but shot over the goal in the 49th minute. VfB had a lot of chances, but failed to score. When Leipzig fought back, VfB's goalkeeper Florian Müller made a series of good saves. He stopped Willi Orban's header with good reflexes just in front of the line in the 72nd minute. After this series of chances from the opponent, VfB managed to slow the game down. Both teams had good goal chances in the final minutes. The game ended with a 1:1 draw, which was a good result against last year's cup winners.

In the end both teams parted with 1:1. VfB showed a very strong fighting performance against the cup winners and Champions League participants and deserved this point.

After the first game of the season, VfB Stuttgart is in the joint 10th position in the league table. It's the beginning of a long fight. In the previous season VfB was in the relegation zone, and they only saved themselves in the final match.
