Werder Bremen – VfB Stuttgart
Date: 13th August 2022, 3:30 pm
Result: 2 – 2
It's VfB Stuttgart's first away game of the season, their first match in their
newly designed black shirt for away matches. I say black, because that's the
first impression you get when looking at it, but if you look closely you'll
see that there are grey patterns. These are Stuttgart landmarks. Maybe one of
my readers is smart enough to name them all. It's too much hard work for me.
The match is against Werder Bremen, newly promoted from the second division.
The Stuttgart team went into the game brimming with confidence, which was
quickly shattered. Bremen scored the first goal after only four minutes. Following
a cross from Anthony Jung, Niclas Fallkrüg headed the ball into the net. This
gave them momentum for a series of attacks in the following minutes. It wasn't
until the 20th minute that VfB began to fight back. In the 38th minute VfB's
captain, Wataru Endo, scored the equaliser.
The second half began with desperate to-ing and fro-ing from both teams. In
the 55th minute Tiago Tomas hit a powerful shot that Bremen's goalkeeper could
barely stop with his foot. In the 59th minute Bremen had a chance, but Marvin
Duksh shot the ball too high. It wasn't until the 77th minute that Silas
slotted the ball into the corner of the net, giving VfB Stuttgart a 2:1 lead.
When it came to the 90 minute mark, everyone thought it was over, but Bremen
still fought valiantly. In the fifth minute of extra time, only seconds before
the game's end, Bremen's Scottish right winger Oliver Burke knocked the ball
into the goal.
The draw is a frustrating result, leaving VfB in the 11th position in the
league table (out of 18 teams). It's still early in the season. Let's hope VfB
can rise to their former glory.
