The Hills have Thighs (4 Stars)

I've never had to wait so long for a film before. "The Hills Have Thighs" was made in 2010 and released on DVD a short time later on DVD, but it was a limited edition and already out of stock by the time I tried to buy it. So I've waited... and waited... and waited... until it was finally remastered for Blu-ray earlier this year. It isn't available from Amazon, it's sold exclusively by Makeflix. Click the picture above for a link.

As you might have guessed, it's a parody of "The Hills Have Eyes", a horror film made four years earlier in 2006. A man called Bill is hiking alone in the mountains of South Texas. What he doesn't know is that the area was used for atom bomb tests 60 years previously. As a result women have turned into busty mutants who capture men and use them for sex. Poor Bill. All I can say is that they wouldn't need weapons to capture me. I'd surrender to them and do whatever they demand.

When he doesn't return home, four of Bill's friends go searching for him. (From left to right: Mary, Sandy, Mark and Ben). They don't know if he's alive or dead, but they at least want to find his body. When they find his wallet, still full of money, they fear the worst. What sort of person would take Bill but leave his money behind?

The Bible says that the love of money is the root of all evil. If that's the case, the mutant women must be pure and sinless. They don't want money, they just want men.

The four friends meet a mysterious woman called Tanya wandering in the mountains. She tells them she's been looking for her father for the last 10 years, but she's obviously keeping secrets from them. This is the weakest part of the film. The director could have added an extra 15 minutes to tell us what her true intentions are. But Tanya helps them by giving them a warning. She tells them that the women will capture men alive but kill women.

Ben and Mark send Mary and Sandy away for their own safety, so they can confront the mutant women themselves.

It's a battle like the world has never seen before. I just have one question: if the women have lived all their lives in the mountains, where have the fashionable clothes come from? Shouldn't they be running around naked?

Who will win the battle? Buy the Blu-ray if you want to find out. You can't expect me to tell you everything.

When talking about the Smallville episode "Exodus", Kristin Kreuk insisted that she hadn't used her tongue when she was kissing Tom Welling. She says it wouldn't have been professional. Obviously Julie K. Smith and Brandin Racklet thought differently when they were sharing a passionate kiss. They look like duelling tongues. In my books that's professional enough.

Bullet Train (5 Stars)

The Japanese Shinkansen, called the Bullet Train in English, is one of the fastest trains in the world. It travels commercially at a speed of 200 miles per hours, and it's reached 275 miles per hour in test runs. It's also one of the safest trains in the world. According to Wikipedia, "Over the Shinkansen's 50-plus-year history, carrying over 10 billion passengers, there has not been a single passenger fatality or injury on board due to derailments or collisions". It's good that the film "Bullet Train" is fictional, because it would have spoilt this spotless record. The train is derailed in Kyoto, not to mention various people being shot, poisoned or stabbed to death by various assassins on the train.

If I were to give a plot summary I'd have to write a review that runs for several pages. So much happens in the two hour run time. The main character is a man codenamed Ladybug. Some reviews incorrectly call him an assassin. If they'd paid attention to the film they would have noticed that he refused to take a gun with him on his mission. He's a professional thief, a snatch and grab guy. He's been hired to steal a briefcase containing the ransom money for the kidnapped son of a Yakuza boss. Two British assassins have freed the son and are bringing him back home, together with the no longer needed ransom money.

Many of the interlocking plots are the result of coincidences. The train from Tokyo to Kyoto is full of assassins intending to carry out different missions. Ladybug, whose real name we're never told, is caught in the middle.

For reasons unknown to me, critics don't like the film. Okay, I say "unknown to me", but I've read their reviews. What I mean is that I don't understand why they haven't been won over by the positive features of the film. The film is chaos, but it's never difficult to understand. The characters are well developed, even the ones who meet an early death. The story is well written, and the action scenes are intense. Seriously, I don't see any reason not to like it. I'm not alone in my opinion, proved by the fact that it was a box office success.

Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken (4 Stars)

Ruby is a typical 15-year-old girl who lives in a town by the sea in California. Well, maybe not so typical. Her family has blue skin. Ruby's mother says it's because they're from Canada, and everyone in the town believes her. Naturally. Everyone knows that Canadians are weird.

Ruby's biggest concern is finding a date to go with her to junior prom. Nobody has asked her yet, so she needs to find the courage to take the initiative. When she tries to talk to Connor, her school crush, she accidentally knocks him into the water. She jumps in to save him, even though her parents have told her she must never go into the ocean. She transforms into a giant kraken. She was never told that her family are krakens living among humans.

The story goes back and forwards. I shan't divulge any spoilers, except to say that when she's on land she changes back to a normal teenage girl, but whenever she's in the water she's a giant kraken. She has to struggle to find love on land while exploring her true nature underwater.

This is a comical coming-of-age drama. There's something weird about the film rating. In Germany it has a rating of 0 years, which I consider appropriate, but in Austria it has a rating of 8 years. My grandson Oliver was able to watch the film with me, but if we'd lived in Austria he'd be too young. What is the Austrian film board thinking?

Flash Gordon (5 Stars)

George Lucas wanted to make a film about Flash Gordon, but it was the beginning of his career and he didn't have enough money to buy the rights. As an alternative, he created new characters for a film called "Star Wars" in 1977. I can't help wondering how film history would have been changed if he'd been able to make "Flash Gordon". Fans of the comic strip are fast to point out scenes in "Star Wars" that borrow ideas from "Flash Gordon".

After seeing the film in the cinema two months ago, I was determined to buy the new remastered version on Blu-ray. I already owned it on DVD, but the new version brings out the trashy colour mix. No attempt is made to look realistic.

Flash Gordon is the football quarterback who saves the universe. I'm referring to the sport that Americans call football, not real football. He's the one on the left, in case his shirt doesn't make it obvious. Together with the travel agent Dale Arden (right), he crash lands at the home of the disgraced scientist Hans Zarkov (centre). He was fired from his position at NASA for believing that contact with alien beings would soon take place, but he was right. There are freak weather conditions which Zarkov correctly interprets as an attack from outer space. He wants to fly to meet the aliens in his home made rocket, but its design needs someone to stand on a pedal at one side of the cockpit while he's navigating on the other side, so he tricks Flash and Dale into accompanying him.

Don't you think that the space ship's control panel looks like the Tardis?

There's a newspaper article about Dr.  Zarkov being fired, but only the first paragraph is about him. The rest of the article is about dogs being allowed to run free in Wellesley, Massachussets. That's sloppy journalism.

Zarkov assumes that an advanced civilisation would be open for rational negotiations, but he hasn't reckoned with a leader like Emperor Ming. He wants to destroy the Earth just for his amusement.

Ming's daughter Aura shares his cruelty, but she's better looking. She's played by Ornella Muti, one of the most beautiful Italian actresses who's ever lived.

Princess Aura falls in love with Flash and protects him from her father. First she has to touch him to check his body is still in working order. In the scene Flash Gordon is sleeping, but the actor Sam Jones must have been lying nervously, trying to pretend nothing was happening. Sometimes it's hard being an actor.

Ming is hated and feared by his people, so he rules by pitting them against one another. Prince Vultan is the leader of the Hawkmen.

Prince Barin is the leader of the Arborians, tree dwellers.

Flash leads a rebellion against Ming which can only succeed if he persuades the two princes to join forces. That's not as easy as it sounds.

"Flash Gordon" succeeds as a film by not taking itself seriously. It had a big budget for its time, twice as much as "Star Wars", but it maintained a B-Movie feeling. The film isn't intended to be a comedy, but many of the scenes are so ridiculous that it's impossible not to laugh.

Shazam: Fury of the Gods (5 Stars)

This is the sequel to "Shazam", made four years earlier in 2019. In the film itself two years have passed. That should have been the real world time difference. The sequel was scheduled to be released in 2021, but it was delayed by the Coronavirus pandemic. It's a shame that time is passing so fast in the film. Billy Baxton is now 17 years old, so by the time the third film is made we will have lost the irony of a child being a super-hero. In the comics his age was never explicitly stated, but he looked like he was 10 years old.

The girls are obvious, but I still have problems telling Billy's three brothers apart in their adult bodies. I've put these two photos side by side to help me in the future. The next time I watch a Shazam film I'll put this page on my phone so I can glimpse at it when the film is running.

I never read the Shazam comics when I was younger, not one, so I have no idea how accurate the depiction of the characters is. If you know more than me, please leave a comment below. All I can say is that cute little Darla transforms into a smoking hot big Darla. I couldn't remember seeing Meagan Good in the past, but after checking her filmography I realised I'd seen her in "Venom", and I was even impressed enough to include a screenshot of her.

The film is about the return of three Greek Goddesses to the Earth, Hespera, Kalypso and Anthea. They're the daughters of Atlas, and they want to turn the Earth into a new Olympus. There seems to be some cultural confusion, because they also plant the Biblical Tree of Life, but who cares? It's a good story.

Of the three Goddesses, Kalypso (Lucy Liu) is totally evil, while Anthea (Rachel Zegler) is good and wants to spare mankind. Hespera (Helen Mirren) is morally in between the two extremes, more pragmatic than the other two. Kalypso wants to kill everyone, but Hespera will let anyone live who doesn't oppose their rule.

Shazam and his family are the only ones standing in their way. In the two years since the first film they've gained a bad reputation in their home town of Philadelphia. They frequently go into action fighting crime, but they're so inept that they've been called the Philly Fiascos. What do you expect from children?

The film has one of the most memorable catchphrases ever:

"Taste the rainbow, motherfuckers!"

The film was a box office flop with a success rate of -0.8. I have no idea why. It's every bit as good as the first film.

Shazam (5 Stars)

I didn't mention in my pervious reviews of "Shazam" that John Glover appears in a small role as the father of the film's villain, Dr. Thaddeus Silvana. We see him in the opening scene in 1974 and in the present day, presumably 2019. He doesn't seem to have aged in the 45 years. That's appropriate. His age isn't stated in the film, but John was 73 when he made the film, and he looks much younger. He has good hair for his age, more grey streaks than he had 20 years ago in "Smallville", but still attractive enough to make me jealous. As a teenager I had beautiful long hair, which I foolishly (?) cut short when I started working after university. I had my first bald patch in my mid thirties, which grew steadily larger, until it was so big that I started to shave my head when I was 45. In retrospect, I should have paid a few thousand Euros for hair transplant. A friend of mine underwent the procedure, and his new hair looks very realistic. It's too late now.

I watched "Shazam" today because I bought the second Shazam film while I was on holiday in England. I want to prepare myself, because I missed it in the cinema while I was ill last year. If I remember correctly, I was already back home, but I was too unwell to go to the cinema. I missed at least two months of good films. Blu-ray discs are a reasonable alternative, but they don't live up to the experience of a cinema.

Asteroid City (2 Stars)

What is the director Wes Anderson trying to do? Does he want to entertain the audience or just provoke us? I honestly don't know. I felt provoked. There were two young women sitting in front of me who felt just as provoked. Every time something strange happened in the film they turned and looked at one another. About half an hour from the end one of them put on her jacket and wanted to leave, but her friend tugged at her and told her to stay. It's a film that I almost walked out of. As it was, I was the only person in the cinema who remained seating to watch the bird hopping around during the final credits.

It's a film within a film, or rather a play within a film. It's about a playwright who writes, casts and directs a play about a group of people, mostly stargazers, who come together in a fictional city in the desert. While being told about an asteroid that fell in the desert thousands of years ago, an alien arrives and takes the asteroid away.

It's deliberately left unclear what's part of the play and what's really happening. It's possible that a real alien arrives while the play is running.

Wes Anderson has put a lot of work into the visual effects of the film. That's the only reason I haven't given the film a one star rating. I didn't enjoy it, and I have no intention to ever watch it again.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (4½ Stars)

A funny thing happened to me on the way to the cinema.....

I arrived early, so I was sitting on the steps opposite the cinema eating an ice cream. A beggar came up to me, holding his hand out to ask for money. In an attempt to be sarcastic I held my hand out to ask him for money. He gave me three cents, and then he threw the rest of his money on the floor and stormed off in a rage, saying something I didn't understand. What was he doing? If it was an attempt to give me a bad conscience, it didn't work. As soon as I finished my ice cream I gathered up his money from the floor, another 12 cents. It's possible that it was more money, because the coins might have rolled away. The net result of this encounter is that I became 15 cents richer.

I said it was an attempt to be sarcastic, because I don't understand sarcasm. It's happened several times in my life that someone said something to me, I replied, and then the person said "I was being sarcastic".  So I gave the wrong reply. I should have interpreted the statement as meaning the opposite of what was said. But how was I to know that it was a false statement?

I've looked up definitions of sarcasm online, but I still don't get it. In order to understand sarcasm, I've tried to be sarcastic myself. If I understand correctly, I have to tell a lie, but it has to be a lie that the other person knows is a lie. Should that make people laugh? For instance, I told a friend that I like Donald Trump. She knows that I don't like him, so she should have laughed. Instead of that she just said "I thought you didn't like him". I replied, "I was being sarcastic", and she just looked at me as if I was being crazy. That's the same way that I react when people are sarcastic with me. Is that the intention? Is sarcasm supposed to be a joke that nobody understands? So what's the point of it?

Today I pretended to be a beggar. That was my way of being sarcastic. Was it successful? It made the man angry, so yes, maybe that is what sarcasm is supposed to achieve.

So I proceeded to Gloria, where I was greeted by Indiana Jones himself. That was my first impression. A closer look told me it was my fellow film fan Thomas Daake dressed up as Indiana Jones. It's an amazingly accurate costume. The only inaccuracy is that there's no gun in his holster. Thomas told me that he has a fake gun as part of the costume, but he chose not to wear it because it looks too genuine. I understand. He's standing in front of a poster of Barbie. I wonder if he'll dress up as Ken next week.

The film starts in 1944, when Indiana Jones is attempting to steal the Antikythera, the Dial of Archimedes, from the Nazis. It's rumoured to be able to predict fissures in time and allow limited time travel. In 1969, a former Nazi who's become an American wants the Dial so that he can go back in time and change the result of World War Two.

The film is an enjoyable adventure romp, despite not being directed by Steven Spielberg. It's supposed to be the last film in the Indiana Jones series. Never say never.

Word of the Day: MOSS

The word of the day is MOSS.

I'm going home tomorrow, so this is my last ticket for this year.

Will you miss seeing my bus tickets? Or will you miss seeing photos of Alika White? I have lots more photos of her on my computer, over 1600 of them, but I don't intend to share them, except for one or two here and there. They're mostly screenshots from her videos. If you want to see more of her, please click here to visit her website. You won't regret it. She's one of the most exciting women in England or anywhere else.

Free Guy (5 Stars)

I like this poster. Guy is Free City's superhero. The only superhero. But what does his costume look like when he rips off his shirt? Exactly the same!

I've read that a sequel is planned. That gives me a funny feeling. If you've seen "Free Guy" you'll know that it's not the sort of film that needs a sequel. I hope they don't totally ruin it.

Tomorrow War (2 Stars)

This is an Amazon original science-fiction film. Chris Pratt plays Dan Forester, who used to be an elite soldier but has now turned pacifist and works as a high school Biology teacher.

America is visited by soldiers from 28 years in the future. They say that the world has been invaded by aliens, and the human race is on the verge of being wiped out. They recruit people from the present day to join the fight in the future. The present day population become disillusioned when very few soldiers return from the future alive.

Dan is opposed to taking part in the war, but he's drafted against his will.

The film is a mess, starting with the premise. Why would people from today want to fight in a war in the future? If most of the Earth's population in the future has been destroyed, what's the use in sending a few thousand people from today? Wouldn't it be better to stay in the present and prepare defences to fight the aliens 28 years from now?

The film has some very good actors, including Chris Pratt, J. K. Simmons and Yvonne Strahovski, but we hardly notice their talent in the middle of the CGI monsters. The film isn't available on disc, which is just as well, because I can't imagine anyone wanting to buy it.

Word of the Day: YORK

The word of the day is YORK.

This is an interesting word. As far as I can remember, it's the first time a place name has been used as the word of the day.

The price of bus tickets went up on July 3rd. They now cost £4.50. See the small print at the bottom of the ticket.

I've been accused of using my Word of the Day posts as an excuse for posting photos of Alika White. That's only half true. I would have made the posts without her, but they would have been boring if I'd only posted a photo of the bus ticket and nothing else.

Jojo Rabbit (5 Stars)

After watching "Jojo Rabbit" on Disney Plus today, I have two questions:

1. Why haven't I watched it since 2020?

2. Why isn't it in my top 100 films list?

I'll watch it again soon and decide where it deserves to be in my list. But please don't hold your breath while you're waiting?

The Flash (3 Stars)

"The film is considered one of the biggest box-office bombs of all-time, with expected losses for Warner Bros to be as much as $200 million".

So it wasn't just me who didn't like "The Flash"? DC Studios are obviously jumping on the multiverse bandwagon. If Marvel can do it, so can they. The comparisons weren't lost on the others in the audience. When I was walking out I was following two DC fans in their thirties. One of them said, "It's a better multiverse film than Spider-Man", and he pointed to a poster of "Across the Spider-Verse", which is also showing at the moment. That's a bad comparison, putting two average quality films side by side. They should have compared it with "Spider-Man: No Way Home", which is a much better film.

Even as far as the subject matter is concerned, "The Flash" is more similar to "No Way Home". Barry Allen (the Flash) meets three different versions of Batman, played by Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton and George Clooney". If DC insists on changes in their version of the multiverse, they should have changed the actor playing Barry Allen. In the TV series the Flash is played by Grant Gustin, who's a terrific actor. In the film Ezra Miller is awful. But let's be fair to him. Maybe he's okay as an actor, it's just the way he was told to play the role. He's an idiot, making one clumsy mistake after another. That's not the Flash that we know in the comics.

The only part of the film that I liked was the two minutes when Wonder Woman appeared. Gal Gadot is a beautiful actress. We should have seen more of her and less of Batman. And less of the Flash.

I haven't written anything about the plot. Go and see the film yourself. Or don't bother. If you're a big DC fan, like the two men in my cinema, you might like it. The other 95% of the world can give it a miss.

Word of the Day: SALT

The word of the day is SALT.

If you look at the ticket closely, you'll see that it's different to the other tickets I've shown this month. It's not just a bus ticket, it's also valid on the trams in the Birmingham area. The ticket is also more expensive, £7.70 instead of £4.00

It was a rainy day, and the tram was very crowded, so I only managed to take one photo of the journey. This is the final stop in Edgbaston. I believe there are plans to extend the tram line to other stations.

Here's another photo of Alika White. Most girls feel insulted if they're called a bitch, but not Alika. She's proud to be a bitch. If you get too close she'll slap your face or knee you in the balls.

General: My Favourite Films

Yesterday I updated my top films list for the first time in six months. I shan't publish my new list in this post, because it might have changed again by the time you read this.

Not much has changed in the last six months. My top 20 is identical. The biggest changes are at the bottom of the list. It's impossible for me to stick to a list. I change my mind too often.

I've made a slight change to the format of my list. Looking at it today, I'm not happy with the way it looks, so I might change it again. Yesterday I was looking at top films lists put together by other film fans, and I became aware that they only included films made in English. In contrast, my list has 24 foreign language films. For this reason, I've added the nationality of non-English films to my list. Many readers might otherwise be confused when they see "Tag" in fourth place in my list. "Huh, what's that?" By adding the information that it's a Japanese film they know where to check it out.

The pictures I've used in this post, screenshots from "I still know what you did last summer", aren't random. I read yesterday that it will be released on a remastered 4K disc in September. That was totally unexpected. Of all the films in my list, it's the one least appreciated by the critics. It has a measly 7% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. And yet it's getting an upgrade to 4K. Someone somewhere must love it.

The highest Rotten Tomatoes rating in my list is 100% for "Forest of Love".

Maybe I should put together a list of the films in my top 100 which are only available on DVD, not Blu-ray. Without checking, I can think of four. I shan't name them until I'm sure my list is complete.
