Deadpool & Wolverine (5 Stars)

I've finally bought "Deadpool & Wolverine" on Blu-Ray. It took a while. I had to wait until the price dropped to something I was willing to pay. Yes, I know it's on Disney Plus, but that's not good enough for me. I need to hold the shiny metal disc in my hand. It was the best film of 2024, so it deserves a special place in my collection.

This is what we've been waiting for since 2000. The real Wolverine!

The film features the return of Wunmi Mosaku as Hunter B-15. She needs a better name. Can I call her B for short? But whatever her name is, she gets my vote for Miss Multiverse 2025.

That's all I'm writing today. What? Are you complaining? Be honest... what would you rather have? A thousand dull words from me or a sexy action photo of Hunter B-15?

My case rests.

Blade Trinity (5 Stars)

Nobody but Wesley Snipes can play Blade. He's getting older, but as long as he can still stand upright he can play the role. Who else could step into his shoes? Jamie Foxx? No way! Michael Jordan? Hmmm, maybe. Idris Elba? Too British.

After my last review I was criticised for giving it a five star rating because it's too much of a B-Movie. I agree that it has a B-Movie feel to it, but I won't budge from my rating. It's a success in everything it sets out to do.

Disney Wednesday #25

I was surprised to find out that "Deadpool & Wolverine" is already streaming on Disney Plus. I would have known if I'd occasionally logged in. As my readers know, I'm not much of a streaming fan. That doesn't mean I'm against streaming in principle. I have friends who boycott the streaming services. I wouldn't go that far. I need Netflix and the others to watch films that haven't been released on disc yet; or worse still, films like "Veneciafrenia" that will never be released on disc. Streaming services are also useful for me to watch films out of curiosity that I'm not sure I like.

I'm getting off topic. Concerning "Deadpool & Wolverine", I'm surprised that it's gone to streaming so soon. It's less than three months since it left the cinemas. Usually that's the sign that a film had performed badly at the box office, but that's hardly the case with "Deadpool & Wolverine". It's the second highest grossing film of the year so far, second only to "Inside Out 2".

It's a good film, though not up to the quality of the first two films. On the other hand, it's hilarious. There are non-stop in-jokes about the politics of the film studios behind the scenes. Not secret politics, of course. All Marvel fans have been reading what's going on with one company being bought by another.

I shan't write any more for now. I'll wait until I buy the film on Blu-ray, although I suspect that it'll only be a brief plot summary. The film isn't about the plot, it's about the jokes.

Deadpool & Wolverine (5 Stars)

It's good to be back in the cinema again, and what better film to watch than the new Deadpool film, "Deadpool & Wolverine"? I went to see the film with trepidation after reading that Ryan Reynolds had disagreements about the refilming of the film's third act. I feared the worst. Was it going to be another "Marvels"? I needn't have worried. I enjoyed the film from beginning to end.

It's a multiverse saga. That's another thing that made me groan when I read about the film in its early production days. Again, I was pleasantly surprised that the story succeeded. The multiverse was used as as a method of bringing back characters from old "forgotten" films. I shan't name them, because I don't want to rob you of the wow effect that I felt when they appeared on screen.

After watching the film I read reviews by critics who couldn't decide whether it's a good film or a bad film. The story is weak, which is obvious to me, but it's not about the story. The film jumps from one joke to the next, with only short pauses for action. The audience was laughing from beginning to end.

And Wunmi Mosaku is back! That's enough of a reason to watch the film!

"Deadpool & Wolverine" is my favourite film of the year so far.

IF (4 Stars)

"IF" stands for "Imaginary Friends". 12-year-old Bea is living with her grandmother in New York City while her father is in hospital waiting for heart surgery. She finds that strange creatures live in an apartment in the building. They live with a man called Cal who collects imaginary friends that were abandoned when children grew up into adulthood. Cal is looking for someone to help him reunite  the imaginary friends with their former owners. Bea accepts the job, but she's not too successful.

I shan't go into the plot in any more detail to avoid spoilers. After seeing the trailers I was surprised that it's very much a children's film. I expected something that would bridge the gap between children's films and adult films, but there's hardly anything adult in the film.

I never had an imaginary friend as a child. As far as I know. One of the main themes of the film is that adults have forgotten their imaginary friends. As a child I was a loner. Until I was eight I lived on the grounds of Little Aston Hall. There were only three families, and neither of the other families had children, so I didn't have anyone to play with. If anyone ever needed an imaginary friend, it was me.

Bullet Train (5 Stars)

The Japanese Shinkansen, called the Bullet Train in English, is one of the fastest trains in the world. It travels commercially at a speed of 200 miles per hours, and it's reached 275 miles per hour in test runs. It's also one of the safest trains in the world. According to Wikipedia, "Over the Shinkansen's 50-plus-year history, carrying over 10 billion passengers, there has not been a single passenger fatality or injury on board due to derailments or collisions". It's good that the film "Bullet Train" is fictional, because it would have spoilt this spotless record. The train is derailed in Kyoto, not to mention various people being shot, poisoned or stabbed to death by various assassins on the train.

If I were to give a plot summary I'd have to write a review that runs for several pages. So much happens in the two hour run time. The main character is a man codenamed Ladybug. Some reviews incorrectly call him an assassin. If they'd paid attention to the film they would have noticed that he refused to take a gun with him on his mission. He's a professional thief, a snatch and grab guy. He's been hired to steal a briefcase containing the ransom money for the kidnapped son of a Yakuza boss. Two British assassins have freed the son and are bringing him back home, together with the no longer needed ransom money.

Many of the interlocking plots are the result of coincidences. The train from Tokyo to Kyoto is full of assassins intending to carry out different missions. Ladybug, whose real name we're never told, is caught in the middle.

For reasons unknown to me, critics don't like the film. Okay, I say "unknown to me", but I've read their reviews. What I mean is that I don't understand why they haven't been won over by the positive features of the film. The film is chaos, but it's never difficult to understand. The characters are well developed, even the ones who meet an early death. The story is well written, and the action scenes are intense. Seriously, I don't see any reason not to like it. I'm not alone in my opinion, proved by the fact that it was a box office success.

Free Guy (5 Stars)

Disney Wednesday #19

I like this poster. Guy is Free City's superhero. The only superhero. But what does his costume look like when he rips off his shirt? Exactly the same!

I've read that a sequel is planned. That gives me a funny feeling. If you've seen "Free Guy" you'll know that it's not the sort of film that needs a sequel. I hope they don't totally ruin it.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (3 Stars)

The title of this film makes me think that Marvel intended to make a series of origin films about the different X-Men. Fourteen years have passed, and there still aren't any more films. There used to be origin stories in the early issues of the X-Men comics (X-Men #38 to #57). These stories could have been adapted for films. It was a missed chance.

Deadpool (5 Stars)

Deadpool must be the coolest Marvel superhero. (Or call him an anti-hero if you prefer). When he's fighting he banters with the villains, and when he's not fighting her banters with the cinema audience. He gives public service announcements, like telling people not to leave rubbish on the seats when they leave. His costume actually looks like it does in the comics, which is a rarity. He only has one fault: he likes Wham! I mean Wham the 1980's boyband, not Wham the 1960's weekly British comic. Okay, I admit that Wham is better than the awful rap music from America, and I'll even concede that George Michael has a good voice, but I find their music so bland and soulless. Their music is like candy floss; you take a big mouthful, but when you start to chew you realise you have nothing in your mouth. Wham's music isn't unpleasant, but it's not pleasant either, it's just... nothing.

Brianna Hildebrand is such a cool character as Negasonic Teenage Warhead that I wish she could get her own spin-off film. Or better still, she should make a sequel to "Tragedy Girls". She's not quite as cool as Deadpool, but at least she doesn't like Wham. And she should take that metal out of her nose.

Hobbs & Shaw (4 Stars)

Wow! Dwayne Johnson has muscles! What do they feed them in Samoa?

Or is it the pancakes that he eats in America?

This is the first film in which he performs the People's Eyebrow (TM). I'm sure he could raise his eyebrow higher in his wrestling days. I'll have to check.

Out of all the professional wrestlers who've ever tried their hand at acting, Dwayne is the most talented. Hulk Hogan was embarrassing. John Cena tries his best, but he just doesn't have what it takes. Can you recognise another WWE wrestler who appears in "Hobbs & Shaw" as a non-speaking extra? Will Roman Reigns take the plunge into real acting? He's 37, whereas Dwayne Johnson was 29 when he made his first film, "The Mummy Returns", followed by his first lead role in "The Scorpion King" a year later. I have "The Scorpion King" on DVD, but I haven't watched it since I started my blog in September 2010. I don't think I liked it very much, but after all this time I should give it another chance.

Maybe I should write a few words about the film itself. Dwayne Johnson plays the DSS agent Luke Hobbs, Jason Statham plays the ex-SAS fighter Deckard Shaw. Deckard was the main villain in "Fast & Furious 7" when he sought revenge for the near-death of his criminal brother, but he teamed up with Vin Diesel's gang as a hero in "Fast & Furious 8". I'm surprised that the two initially refuse to work together when they're assigned to the same case. Luke repeatedly says that he doesn't like Deckard, but I thought they'd already got over it in "Fast & Furious 8".

Their main antagonist is Brixton Lore, a genetically enhanced super-soldier played by Idris Elba. He calls himself the Black Superman. Okay, but I think the Samoan Superman is stronger.

There's actually another antagonist behind the scenes. Brixton works for a high-tech terrorist organisation called Eteon. The director of Eteon says that Luke and Deckard know him, but we only hear his voice and his identity is never revealed. A sequel was planned, but the latest news is that it won't be made, so we might never find out who this mysterious character is.

Free Guy (5 Stars)

Click here to read my first review of "Free Guy". I honestly don't have any more to say about it. All that's going through my mind today is a prostate test I had this morning. Nobody warned me that it would be so painful. I should have been put to sleep, or at the very least I should have had a local anaesthetic. It was torture, and not the sort of torture that I enjoy. I feel so bad about it that I don't want to visit the doctor again. There must be other doctors who handle their patients more gently.

But "Free Guy" is a great film. It was a good choice watching it this evening. I needed something to distract me, even if I feel unable to write about it afterwards.

Bullet Train (5 Stars)

Brad Pitt plays a former assassin with the codename Ladybug. He used to be a killer, but now he only accepts jobs where he steals items. He's being paid to steal a briefcase from a bullet train travelling from Tokyo to Kyoto. The problem is that the man carrying the briefcase is an assassin that he met in a previous job. He doesn't remember Ladybug at first, but when he does he also remembers that he has a grudge against him.

But there are other killers on the train. One wants revenge on Ladybug for killing his wife, although Ladybug knows he never did it. In fact, the train journey seems like an assassins' convention. Ladybug might not want to kill anyone, but he's willing to kill in self defence. The film has so many details, too many to go into without giving away spoilers. All I'll say is that this is the best film I've seen this year., so far. The mix of action and comedy is perfect. Japan is shown as a kitsch-ridden caricature. And there's a fast train. What else do you want?

Red Notice (4 Stars)

Netflix Thursday #6

This is a film that I watched today, knowing nothing about it in advance. I just saw the names Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds and thought to myself that it couldn't possibly be bad with two such wonderful actors.

The film is about three golden eggs studded with jewels that were given by Mark Antony to Cleopatra as a wedding gift. All three eggs were lost after their death, but two of the eggs were found in 1907. One of the eggs is now on display at a museum in Rome. The other is in the possession of a private collector.

Dwayne Johnson plays John Hartley, an FBI agent visiting Rome after being tipped off that the egg will be stolen. He arrives too late, due to hindrances by Interpol and the museum director. Nolan Booth, a notorious art thief played by Ryan Reynolds, has already replaced the egg with a fake, but he hasn't yet left the building. After a spectacular chase Hartley captures Booth and retrieves the egg, but it's stolen from police custody under his nose.

The tipoff came from another international art thief known as the Bishop. This is actually a woman. What do you call a female bishop? Evidently the word bishop is still used, because the church has no female bishops. The word bishopess (which sounds wrong to me) is used to describe a bishop's wife. The Bishop is the film is played by the Israeli actress Gal Gadot. She's set Hartley up by planting evidence that he was responsible for stealing the egg. Booth and Hartley are imprisoned in the same cell in a high security prison in Russia.

From this point on it becomes a buddy movie. The cop and the crook have to work together, first to escape from prison and then to find the Bishop. Their search takes them from continent to continent. It also involves stealing the other two eggs to reunite all three of them. Didn't I say that the third egg was lost? Yes, but Nolan Booth knows where it's hidden. It was discovered by the Nazis in Egypt, and now it's in a hidden bunker with Nazi loot in Argentina.

The film isn't as funny as I expected. Nolan Booth is a humorous character, constantly joking, but that doesn't make the film itself funny. John Hartley is an all-business straight guy. Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds are a perfect on-screen partnership.

I like the film a lot, but I found the plot twists at the end irritating. Why do screenwriters think that a plot twist is needed in so many films today? I miss the good old films where a plot went from A to B without diversions. So a simple plot makes a film predictable? So what? I like predictable films.

"Red Notice" is a Netflix original film, so it isn't available on disc. With a budget of $200 million, it's the most expensive film ever made by Netflix. Two sequels are planned. I can hardly wait!

Free Guy (5 Stars)

Disney Wednesday #1

I've finally taken the plunge. After 18 weeks of my Amazon Friday feature, I've decided to watch films from other streaming services. Every Wednesday I'll be watching a film that streams on Disney Plus. I'm not a member myself, but my son Benjamin subscribes to Disney Plus, and he kindly shares his account with me. I also intend to start a Netflix Thursday feature, probably next week. I wanted to start this week, but I'm going to the cinema tomorrow, so I (probably) won't have time. Do you want to know what I'm going to see tomorrow? I'm not telling you. Check my blog on Friday morning to see what it is.

My regular readers already know that I'm critical of streaming services. It's not because of what they show, it's because of what they don't show. I laugh when people claim that streaming will replace physical media. Maybe it will happen one day, but it's far in the future. My guess is that it'll be at least 30 years from now. Streaming services won't replace physical media until they offer at least 90% of all the films ever made. I'm not just talking about British and American films. It has to be 90% of all films from every country in the world.

At times I felt tempted to drop my Amazon Friday feature. I realised that the films I was watching were average to poor. I shan't have that problem with Disney Plus. There are a large number of great films in its catalogue. As for Netflix, I'm not sure. As far as I know, the really good films on Netflix are films that I already own on Blu-ray. It's possible that I'll run out of films that I want to watch on Netflix in a few months. I'll have to browse the selection.

"Free Guy" is a film that I was anxious to see in the cinema. It was finally shown in Stuttgart two months ago, but I skipped it because it was only being shown in German, i.e. with German dubbing. I don't mind German dubbing, it's usually high quality, but I find it irritating when an actor I know well has a different voice. It's the sound of the voice that bothers me, not the language spoken. The better I know an actor, the more the dubbing bothers me. I've never heard Ryan Reynolds' voice in German, and I don't want to.

After watching "Free Guy" today, I'm regretting my decision not to watch it in the cinema. It's the best new film I've seen this year, and it will probably stay top of the list, unless there's a surprise film at this year's Fantasy Film Festival. The film's quality would have made up for Ryan Reynolds having a Bavarian accent (Dennis Schmidt-Foss). Not having seen it in the cinema will distort my list of the top 10 films of 2021, because I only include films that I've seen in the cinema.

The film is about a man called Guy. He lives a dull life, doing the same things every day. He gets up, puts on a blue shirt and goes to work in a bank. Every day the bank is robbed. In the evening he shares a few beers with his friends. He goes home to bed, sleeps, wakes up, and the day repeats itself.

He accidentally discovers that he's a character in an online video game. To be precise, he's an NPC, a Non-Player Character. His whole world is fake, as in "The Matrix". The difference is that he too is fake.

I don't want to say any more. The film is too new for me to give away spoilers. I'll just talk about its similarity with other films. It's been compared with various films, such as "Ready Player One" and "Blade Runner", but I can only think of six films that deal with similar themes. Ordered by relevance:

1. "The Matrix" – People are unknowingly trapped in a computer simulation.

2. "Tag" – A girl is unknowingly trapped in a computer game.

3. "The Lego Movie" – People are Lego pieces and don't know there's an outside world.

4. "Dark City" – People are trapped on an artificial planet.

5. "Pleasantville" – People are unknowingly characters in a television show.

6. "The Truman Show" – The main character lives in an artificial city built just for him.

The feature that's common to all of these films is that a character or characters are unaware that they live in an artificial world. Maybe when I watch "Free Guy" again I'll compare it with these films in greater detail. Are there any other films that are relevant comparisons? Leave an answer in the Comments box. The Hitman's Bodyguard (3½ Stars)

Yes, I know. This is the third time in a row that I've published my Amazon Friday post on a Sunday. Maybe I should just give up and rename it Amazon Sunday. But if I do that, I probably won't write my post until Tuesday, so I'd better leave it as it is. I know my readers are laughing about me, especially the ones who know me personally.

I picked this film today because the film's sequel, "The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard", is currently in the cinemas. I don't know whether I want to watch it. Both films star Samuel L. Jackson, one of my favourite actors, but they also star Ryan Reynolds. He's very much hit or miss, as far as his films go. I have no doubts about his acting ability, but he's made a large number of bad films. He even jokingly acknowledges this in the mid-credits sequence of "Deadpool 2". He accepted film roles that he should have turned down, and he knows it.

In "The Hitman's Bodyguard" Ryan Reynolds plays Michael Bryce, an AAA certified professional bodyguard, who lost his reputation after one of his clients was killed on his watch. He can't get top profile jobs any more, until his ex-girlfriend asks him to guard Darius Kincaid, a professional hitman who has to give evidence at a war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

The two have met in the past, and Bryce looks down on Kincaid. He thinks he's better, because he saves people's lives while Kincaid kills people. It's not that simple. Bryce will guard anyone for money. He doesn't judge his clients. Kincaid is different. He has a conscience, so he only kills those who deserve to die, whether they're criminals or corrupt politicians.

On the plus side, the acting by the two main characters is superb. There are multiple car chases, including a spectacular five-minute chase involving cars, motorbikes and a speedboat through the centre of Amsterdam.

On the negative side, the plot is highly infeasible. It's difficult to take things seriously. The details of the history between the two men are unclear. Evidently Kincaid has attempted to kill Bryce 27 times in the past. Why? I thought Kincaid would only want to kill Bryce's clients.

Compared with Ryan Reynolds' other films, this is average. Not the worst, but far from the best. I still don't know whether I'll watch "The Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard" in the cinema. I'll decide at short notice.

Stan Lee doesn't actually make a cameo in "Deadpool 2", but he appears briefly in one of the trailers. He's even addressed by name. Deadpool emerges from a phone booth after changing into his costume.

This is Marvel dialogue at its best!

The first Deadpool film was so good that I didn't think the sequel could possibly live up to it. I was wrong. I remember sitting wide-mouthed in the cinema on 20th May 2018. When the opening credits rolled (at the 15 minute mark) I already knew that it exceeded the quality of the first film. The humour is similar. The repeated breaking of the third wall is similar. But something is better. Maybe it's the tastefully inappropriate placing of music. I don't know. I just know it's better, and I have great hopes that "Deadpool 3" will be just as good, whenever it's finally released.

This is the second film in Marvel's X-Men franchise in which someone comes from the future to change the past. The first was "Days of Future Past". Cable, a super-soldier from the future, travels back in time to kill Firefist, the mutant who will be responsible for murdering his wife and daughter. When Cable arrives Firefist is still a 12-year-old boy called Russell Collins. Russell is at a turning point. He's a troubled youngster, due to being tortured by the staff of an orphanage run by the Essex Corporation, an organisation that trains mutants to become mercenaries, but he's not truly evil. Cable says that he'll turn evil after his first kill, which is due to happen soon. Deadpool sees the good in the boy and wants to persuade him not to kill anyone. This is ironic, because Deadpool himself is a killer.

Deadpool has contact with the X-Men, but the only team members he sees at the X-Men mansion are Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Yukio. It's a running joke that the other X-Men are missing because the film had a limited budget.

Negasonic Teenage Warhead introduces Yukio as her girlfriend, making them the first openly lesbian couple in a Marvel movie. Yukio is possibly the same character as Yukio in "Wolverine", but it's not clear. Her role in "Deadpool 2" is too minor to make a comparison possible. Logically, they would have to be different characters, because "Wolverine" takes place shortly before "Deadpool 2", yet Yukio looks much younger in the latter film. But when has there ever been any logic in the X-Men continuity?

A bigger problem is a brief cameo by the other X-Men, who are in the mansion after all, though unseen by Deadpool. This was an outtake from "Dark Phoenix", which was being filmed at the same time. "Dark Phoenix" takes place in 1992, so the X-Men should look a lot older in "Deadpool 2", which takes place 25 years later. Even taking into account the rewriting of the timeline in "Days of Future Past", the scene still doesn't fit.

But don't worry about inconsistencies. Just accept the film for what it is. It doesn't take itself seriously, so neither should you.

Dancer's Top Films #39

I'm a big fan of Marvel comics. I'm also a fan of Marvel's films, though maybe not to the same extent. I silently curse whenever a comic book character is changed in the films, whether it's his clothes, his powers or his personality.

I own a lot of Marvel films on Blu-ray. I'm too lazy to count at the moment, but it must be about 40. Some are weak, like the Hulk films, while most are excellent. I'm quite surprised with myself, in retrospect, that I've only included five Marvel films in my top 100 film list. This is the first of the five in my countdown so far; I'll keep you in suspense what the other four are. Still, I think that more of the films should have been included, if only in the lower part of my list. I'll fix this mistake eventually. At my current speed I'll probably finish my countdown by September. I'll post a corrected list as soon as possible after that. I shan't let you down. I hope.

Deadpool is a character who was introduced to Marvel comics in 1991, which I consider to be the post-canon age. That means that the accuracy in his portrayal is less important to me. Nevertheless, judging from the few comics I've read with his adventures, the film seems to be an accurate portrayal of his character in the comics.

Stan Lee does a cameo as a disc jockey in the strip club where Deadpool's girlfriend Vanessa works. After Stan Lee died in 2018 I decided to rewatch all of the Marvel films, emphasising Stan Lee's cameo appearances. I started with the Spider-Man films, the Fantastic Four films and "Daredevil", after which I worked my way through the MCU films up to his death. I omitted the X-Men films initially, but I intended to come back to them later in 2019. Then I forgot them. I'll come back to them later this year, as long as I don't forget them again. "Deadpool" is considered to be an X-Men spin off film, as shown by the guest appearances of Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead.

Deadpool 2 (5 Stars)

This week I finally bought myself a 4K resolution television set. I've been using the standard 1080p resolution since December 2008. I had a 32" television from 2008 to 2012, a 42" television from 2012 to 2016 and a 40" television from 2016 to 2020, all with a 1080p resolution, The downgrade in 2016 was necessitated by moving to Germany. I couldn't take my television with me, so when I arrived in Germany I used the television that was already available.

My new television is 43". Ideally I would have preferred to buy a larger television with OLED technology, the current state of the art, but my space is limited. In my room I have to sit about 1.80 meters away from the screen, so a larger television set would be overkill.

After extensive research, I decided that this television was the best available at this size. At first I was disappointed that the frame is white. Every flatscreen television I've ever owned has a black frame. However, after a few hours sitting in front of it I've grown used to its appearance.

I bought the television from Amazon. I wanted to delay buying a 4K Blu-ray player, but once I had the television in front of me I was impatient. My old Blu-ray player wasn't good enough for me. I jumped on the bus and went to Saturn, an electronics store in Stuttgart city centre. I'd already decided on the Sony UBP-X700 Blu-ray player. It's not the best Blu-ray player on the market, but it's the best in its price range. At Saturn the Blu-ray player costs 25 Euros more than Amazon's price, but they offer a price match guarantee, so I bought it for Amazon's price.

After experimenting with snippets of films on Netflix and Amazon Prime, I finally sat down to watch my first full film with the new equipment. I picked "Deadpool 2", the theatrical version. It's a standard Blu-ray, so it was upscaled to 4K, and the picture was perfect. I currently only own one 4K Blu-ray, "John Wick 2", because the multi-format package (Blu-ray plus 4K) was the same price as the standard Blu-ray alone. I'll have to watch it some time in the next few days.
