It's been two years since I last watched this film. I'd forgotten how good it is.
Tommy and Austin Tilden, a father and son, operate a private morgue, doing autopsies for the police, in Grantham, Virginia. I don't know whether this is a real town, but if it is it must be small, because the morgue only has room for six bodies.
The police are called to a slaughter in a private home. It seems that the husband went mad and shot his family before turning the gun on himself. An unidentified dead woman is found in the basement, naked and half buried. Her body is outwardly in perfect condition, but there are multiple internal injuries. As they dissect her body, the Tildens become more and more puzzled how there could be such extensive damage without leaving any outer marks.
A violent storm rages outside. A tree falls and blocks the exit, trapping the father and son inside the morgue. The dead bodies begin to rise and threaten them. But not all the bodies. The unidentified woman remains motionless on the operating table, as if she's directing all the action around her.
The suspense excellently builds up from the first slow scenes on the operating table to the terrifying climax. This makes the film much scarier than other films which provide constant jump scares from the beginning. Unlike most supernatural horror films, there's a logical explanation for everything that happens. This is one of the scariest films I've ever seen, and it's a fantastic story.
