Mulan is a legendary Chinese woman who has been the subject of many films in
China and America. There's no consensus among historians as to whether she
really existed, but if she did, it was in the late 4th or early 5th Century. I
like to think that she really did exist, because she was a fascinating woman.
She lived in a world that was dominated by men. It was the place of women to
stay at home and bear children. She disguised herself as a man and joined the
army. Due to her skill in battle she was promoted to the rank of general.
This film is an animated musical comedy made by Disney, so it shouldn't be
treated as a historical record. I've only decided to watch it because I want
to watch the new live action film from Disney, which is supposedly a remake.
In this film the Huns invade China. Every family is required to supply one man
to fight in the Chinese army. Usually it's the man at the head of the family,
but in cases where the man is too old or not healthy, one of his sons can take
his place. Fa Zhou is conscripted, despite having a limp. He has no son to
take his place. His daughter Fa Mulan takes his place by cutting her hair and
putting on men's clothing. Her
grandmother prays for her protection, so her ancestors give her a small dragon
and a lucky caterpillar to accompany her.
In the film she doesn't display much fighting skill, but she's a skilful
tactician, and she manages to overcome the Hun army, with the help of dragon and the
caterpillar.
Despite being a comedy, the film has serious overtones. Bigoted patriarchal
messages are often repeated, but Mulan doesn't let herself be dissuaded. She
loves her family and she loves China, so she does whatever she can to save
them. Maybe she's only a woman, but she's far more capable than the men
around her.
I'm glad that I watched the film today. I wouldn't consider it the best
animated film that Disney has ever made, but it's enjoyable light
entertainment.
