"The Mummy", made in 1999, is a worthy successor to
the 1933 version
starring Boris Karloff. It's not a remake, whatever the foolish contributors
to Wikipedia claim. They're two completely different films which merely share
the same title.
Possibly, the greatest strength of the new film is the casting. If I had more
time to write this review I'd give you a screenshot of each of the major
characters. I'll put it on the to-do list for the next time I watch the film.
Brendan Fraser establishes himself as a charming adventurer. Was he born too
late? He could have starred in the sci-fi adventures of the early 1970's,
replacing such actors as Doug McClure. Rachel Weisz is the perfect damsel in
distress, though upgraded to the 1990's by being the most intelligent person
in the film. John Hannah plays the likeable rogue who's always drinking and
always gambling. Kevin O'Connor is the weaselly character who only thinks of
himself.
But the strongest character is Arnold Vosloo as the mummy Imhotep. He deserves
a photo, even if I've neglected to picture the others. He hardly speaks in the
film, and when he does speak it's in an unintelligible foreign language, but
his subtle smile speaks volumes. There's never any doubt about what's going
through his head. Based on the evidence of this film, he's an incredibly
talented actor. It's a great injustice that he's never gained acclaim as an
A-List actor. His name is only known to the devoted fans of the mostly obscure
films he's appeared in.
Here's a summary of the films in my top 100 list so far:
91. Wie Feuer und Flamme (2001)
92. Attack of the 50 Foot Centerfold (1995)
94. Titanic (1997)
95. Mad City (1997)
96. Leon (1994)
97. Iron Rose (1973)
98. Kick-Ass (2010)
99. Rush Hour (1998)
100. Bella Martha (2001)
Success Rate: + 3.2
