Wet Woman in the Wind (4½ Stars)

Kosuke was a successful playwright in Tokyo. He had a girlfriend who directed plays at the national theatre house. They loved each other, but he was unable to remain faithful to her. Women wouldn't keep their hands off him, and he was too weak to resist. He felt disappointed with himself, so he decided to drop out. He built himself a small hut in the woods just outside of Osaka. There's no electricity, so he uses car batteries to provide light. He catches the rain for drinking water, and he doesn't have a phone. He must have some savings, because he buys vegetables from a nearby farm, and he sometimes visits a bar to drink beer with friends.

This is his hut. It looks like he hammered together scraps that he found at a junkyard. It looks even worse indoors. It doesn't look very stable, but I'll get to that below.

One day Kosuke is sitting at the dock reading a book when a woman crashes her bike into the sea. She climbs out of the water, soaking wet, and she takes off her top in front of him. She wrings it out while he stares at her in amazement. She says she wants to stay at his house for the night, but he refuses. He walks away, but she follows him. He says that he's given up women. She sees that as a challenge. She has to have him! She follows him back to his hut, but he refuses to let her in.

The next day he returns home from buying vegetables and finds the woman in his bed having sex with a man. He politely waits outside until they've finished. He asks their names. The woman says her name is Shiori, but the man's name isn't important, because she'll never see him again. She says that the man didn't satisfy her because he has a small penis; it's Kosuke that she wants. He sends her away again.

Later Kosuke goes to his regular bar, and he finds out that Shiori is the new waitress. He's told that she's a slut who sleeps with surfers in the harbour.

Kosuke's former girlfriend Kyoko comes to visit him from Tokyo, accompanied by her assistant and four young actors. Kyoko seduces Kosuke, but while they're having sex Shiori bursts in and pulls them apart, so that she can have sex with Kyoko. Kosuke wants to join in for a threesome, but Shiori kicks him away.

Without going into too many details, Kosuke makes several attempts to have sex with Shiori over the next few days. She leads him on, but every time he tries to do something she hits or kicks him. One time she chokes him, and while he's lying half conscious she whips him. He refused her, now she's refusing him.

This is the second film in Nikkatsu's Roman Porno Reboot series. All five films were made simultaneously, and then released at four-week intervals. I don't know the director Akihiko Shiota, but I've read enough about him to know that he's a well-known Japanese director who'd never made erotic films before this one. It's interesting to see the ideas that a non-erotic director can bring into an erotic film. I see a strong influence from Russ Meyer. The hut itself gives it away. Do you remember the cabin in "Supervixens"? It's the same concept of superior women taking control of every man around them. There are frequent cuts of different couples having sex in different places. If the women had bigger breasts I might even suspect it's a lost Russ Meyer film.

The film isn't a comedy, but many scenes are so absurd that it's impossible not to laugh. When Kosuke finally has sex with Shiori, she's so vigorous that his hut collapses. That doesn't stop them. They continue in the ruins. Pure Russ Meyer!

I'm sorry to say that the film isn't available on disc with English subtitles. I watched the film on Blu-ray with German subtitles. In America it's currently available to watch on the streaming site Mubi, but you'll have to hurry if you want to watch it, because Mubi rotates its films, only keeping a small number available at any time.
