Doctor Strange #18
Title: The Dream is Dead!
Writer: Steve Englehart
Artist: Gene Colan
Villain: Stygyro
Regulars: Clea
Doctor Strange and Clea bid farewell to Francis Bacon before travelling
forwards in time from 1618 to 1775. They board a ship in London that's headed
to America. Benjamin Franklin is a passenger on the ship. He's been in America
discussing the independence of America, but the talks have failed to reach a
result. Also travelling on the ship is Stygyro, who attacked Doctor Strange in
1618.
Benjamin Franklin tells Doctor Strange that he already knows about him,
because he was mentioned in Francis Bacon's writings. A sea beast attacks the
ship. Doctor Strange defeats the beast, and he sees Stygyro in the crow's nest
commanding it.
They sleep, and when they wake up they find the ship deserted. The only
passengers are Doctor Strange, Clea and Benjamin Franklin. There's a deep hole
in the sea ahead of them which is open all the way to the floor of the
Atlantic Ocean. Doctor Strange makes the ship stop before it falls into the
hole. He leaves Clea to take care of Benjamin Franklin while he investigates
the sea floor.
On the sea floor Doctor Strange finds the sunken city of Atlantis. He's
shocked to see a statue of Stygyro. Then Stygyro himself attacks him. Doctor
Strange defeats him, and Stygyro flees, promising to return. The sea begins to
crash down into the hole. While this is happening, Benjamin Franklin seduces Clea.
That's an interesting episode. Would anyone have written it apart from Steve
Englehart? Doctor Strange returns to the surface. He knows what's happened,
but he doesn't mention it. They climb into a lifeboat, and Doctor Strange
makes it fly to their destination in America.
