Masha and the Bear 1.2.3 - Springtime For Bear

This episode was first broadcast on 3rd April 2009.

At the beginning of this episode Bear wakes up in Spring. Bears don't actually hibernate, as I've pointed out in the past, but they do sleep more than usual. Maybe Masha has left him alone for a few days.

Bear looks out of the window, and he sees that love is in the air. The birds are singing romantically to one another. The rabbits, squirrels and hedgehogs are also in romantic pairs. Only Bear is by himself. It's a sad life for a retired circus bear.

Bear goes for a walk in the forest. When he reaches the pond he stops in amazement. It's the most beautiful sight he's ever seen.

It's the She-Bear that he briefly met in "Jam Day". She's bathing in the pond bear naked. (Sorry, I couldn't resist that awful pun).

Bear might be an animal, but he's all man. The sight of She-Bear in the pond makes his heart swell with love.

Bear rushes back home, puts on his best clothes and takes a box of chocolates and a bouquet of flowers to woo She-Bear.

Masha sees Bear hurrying through the forest and is curious about his strange behaviour.

"Bear! What are you hiding behind your back?"

Bear gives Masha a chocolate to keep her quiet, but she demands more and more. In the end he gives her all the chocolates. At least he still has the flowers to give She-Bear.

Or maybe not. Without gifts he'll have to rely on his charm.

She-Bear has finished bathing and is relaxing with a good book.

Bear entertains her with his circus tricks.

She-Bear is overwhelmed. "All that for me?"

We can't see the name of the book that She-Bear is reading, but the author is D. Chervyatsov, i.e. Denis Chervyatsov. He's one of the producers responsible for "Masha and the Bear".

And off they walk, arm in arm.

But someone is spying on them.

Masha listens to the bears whispering whatever bears in love say to one another when they're alone in the forest.

She-Bear spots Masha.

"Who's this?" she asks. Bear says he's never seen her before.

In bursts a new character, the Black Bear. Or should I call him Black Bear without an article? He'll become a regular character in future episodes.

She-Bear looks at Black Bear curiously.

Black Bear also has a mating ritual. He shows off his strength.

She-Bear is starting to get interested in him.

And look! He has chocolates and flowers! The things Bear couldn't give her!

That does it. She-Bear can't resist Black Bear and walks off with him, leaving Bear behind with a broken heart.

"At least you still have me", says Masha. So he's not completely alone, but somehow it's not the same.

Masha is glad that she has Bear to herself, but she doesn't like seeing him sad. When she's playing ball in the forest she sees She-Bear looking bored while Black Bear continues to show off his strength. Maybe Bear still has a chance with her? The future will tell.

Behind the comedy this is a beautiful romantic story. This episode shows what I mean about "Masha and the Bear" being more than a children's series. I don't think that small children are capable of understanding the emotional depth of the love triangle in the forest.

Song of Friendship

Ice and snow melt and splatter,
Spring is here, that's the proof.
Raindrops go a-pitter-patter
As they're falling from the roof.

Rivers run and overflow,
But they won't divide best friends.
We will pass the high and low,
Meet each other in the end.

Sea is made of water,
Sky is made of air,
Gardens from the flowers,
Forest from the trees.

Rainbows made of seven colours
That are bright and fair,
And the best of friendships
Is made from you and me.

And the best of friendships
Is made from you and me.
