Next Exit (3 Stars)

This is the eighth film in the Stuttgart Fantasy Film Festival.

In the near future proof has been found of the existence of ghosts who seek contact with their loved ones. A doctor has founded a centre called Beyond Life to experiment on the interaction of ghosts with the living. She's called for volunteers to visit her centre and kill themselves in order to study their development after death.

The film follows the journey of two volunteers, Rose and Teddy, from New York to San Francisco by car. They're thrown together by chance. Rose doesn't have a credit card, and Teddy's driving license will expire within a week, so they travel together to solve their respective problems. At first they dislike one another, but as they travel together they develop feelings for one another. They both drink too much alcohol, which causes problems on the four day road trip. Rose is also followed by a ghost that appears in her hotel rooms.

A romantic comedy road movie with a science fiction background? That's a strange mix. Somehow the film didn't appeal to me. The different genres jarred.
