This is the fourth film in the Purge franchise. It serves a prequel, taking
place before the other films. In the previous films we see the Purge as a
national event, intended to be carried out by true American patriots. The
first Purge was carried out solely in Staten Island, New York, as an
experiment.
In the previous films it was hinted that the American government, in
particularly the NFFA (New Founding Fathers of America), intended to save
money be eliminating the poor. In this film all subtlety is cast to the wind.
The government wants the first trial Purge to be a success, so armed
mercenaries are sent in to make sure enough people die.
The mid credits scene declares the trial Purge a success, and it's promised
that the Purge will be repeated every year. Hallelujah! God bless America.
