Bayern München – VfB Stuttgart
Date: 10th September 2022, 3:30 pm
Result: 2 – 2
This is a match that Stuttgart's players and fans have been awaiting with
trepidation. After five games, VfB Stuttgart hasn't won a game, while Bayern
München hasn't lost a game. The Munich team is fighting to get to the top of
the league table, while the Stuttgart team is fighting to keep out of the
relegation zone.
VfB Stuttgart began the game aggressively. They showed a fighting spirit
against the strong opponents. There was a near miss from a shot by
Borna Sosa in the 14th minute. The Stuttgart fans cheered their team on,
sensing a victory, but it wasn't to be. Bayern München broke through and
scored a goal in the 36th minute.
In the second half the crowd went wild when Serhou Guirassy scored an
equaliser in the 51st minute, but the cheers quickly turned to dismay. The
linesman told the referee there had been a foul by Chris Führich. The referee
watched the replay more than once before disallowing the goal. It was a
controversial decision, considered incorrect by the VfB players, but the
referee's decision was final. This wouldn't have happened in the days before
referees consulted replays.
So the score remained 1:0, but not for long. In the 57th minute Chris Führich
scored an undisputed equaliser. Bayern München didn't take this lying down
and scored another goal three minutes later, making the score 2:1. That was
still the score after 90 minutes, but the match continued with five minutes
stoppage time. VfB Stuttgart was still attacking. After 92 minutes there was
an incident in the Munich penalty box. After checking the television screen,
the referee awarded a penalty to Stuttgart. Serhou Guirassy had no
difficulty slotting the ball in the net, making the final score 2:2. So VfB
Stuttgart is still without a victory, and Bayern München is still without a
loss.
Bayern München is the most formidable team in the history of German football.
The team has won the German premiere league for the last 10 years in a row. There's a
common saying that "A draw with Bayern München is as good as a win". That might be
true, but it's no consolation to VfB Stuttgart. The draw means that the team
has now slipped down the league table to 14th position, equal in points to the
15th and 16th places. It can't go on like this. The Stuttgarters are hanging
on to their position in the premiere league with their fingernails.
