Season four takes place two years after the final episode of season three, and
there are a series of shocks.
Lucas Hood has quit as sheriff and lives in a cabin outside Banshee. The only
person who knows where he lives is Rebecca Bowman, who's been visiting him
occasionally. That's Lucas in the photo above. Did you recognise him?
Deputy Brock Lotus has become the new sheriff.
Deputy Billy Raven has left the Banshee Police Department and joined the
Kinaho Police Department.
Kai Proctor has become the Mayor of Banshee.
Carrie Hopewell (previously known as Anna) has become a vigilante, killing or
wounding anyone who's unjustly found innocent in court.
Job (pronounced like the Biblical character) is still missing after being
kidnapped at the end of season three. Lucas assumes he's dead, but Carrie
hasn't given up hope.
Sugar Bates is still in his bar, looking after the $14 million stolen last
season. That's $3.5 million each, but nobody has asked for his share.
Rebecca Bowman is dead. That's what leads Lucas Hood back into civilisation.
He's determined to find her killer, but the problem is that he's the police's
main suspect.
A new arrival in Banshee is FBI agent Veronica Dawson, played by Eliza Dushku,
best known for her role as Faith in
"Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Rebecca Bowman was the third victim of a serial killer, which is why the
FBI has got involved.
Kai Proctor's repentance in season three was short-lived. He's returned to his
life of crime, in particular manufacturing drugs. To distance himself from the
drug operation, he's hired white supremacists to operate his illegal factory.
Nobody would connect white supremacists with the mayor, would they?
There's an uneasy partnership between Kai and Lucas Hood. Even though Lucas is
no longer a policeman, Kai trusts Lucas to find out who killed his niece.
In the past Deputy Brock was determined to put Kai Proctor behind bars, but
now things have changed. As the Banshee sheriff, Brock is expected to support
the mayor, and he does his job by the book.
This is the final season of "Banshee". The series wasn't cancelled. Cinemax
wanted a fifth season, but the series creators Jonathan Tropper and David
Schickler refused. To quote Tropper's own words:
"As we planned out season 4 of Banshee in the writers room, it became
increasingly clear to me that the story was reaching its natural end. We
have a very passionate fan base, and if we handed them a contrived season 5,
they would feel it. And we would feel it. So we made the gut-wrenching
decision to end our run rather than risk a sub par season 5. It hurts, but I
know it's the right move. We are shooting the insane finale right now, and I
believe it wraps up the show in an emotionally satisfying way".
I'm sad that "Banshee" ended after only four seasons. but I respect the
decision of the creators. It's good to end a series on a high note, rather
than dragging it on for years.
